It's a play on an old trick - stare at something yellow, and close your eyes, you'll see the same shape as blue.

I looked at the GIF in ImageReady. Nothing suspicious.

No ****, Sherlock. But that's not the illusion. If you stare properly, the dots will stop reappearing after they flicker off. You'll end up staring at a cross in the middle of a blank grey field with no dots at all.

Please forgive this rather poor explanation: this works because for the colors yellow and blue, and green and red are treated differently by the post-receptor visual processing. The system works in opposition, a system called opponent channels or something to that effect. When you see yellow, this system inhibits blue, when you see blue, it inhibits yellow. In this case, you see red, but because you're staring at the red/violet so long, your mind "get tired" or "runs out" of constantly firing inhibiting signals. Or something like that. So while those are exhausted, since the red-green system is paired together, the green "takes over". However, I'm not sure why there's any green at all though...
Any biology people out there think you can help me out?

I just read about this in my psychology text!!!! This is TOO cool! I'll have to point my prof to this thread!
It is very cool-except I still have afterimages from the pink spots-and the green ones that weren't there.

Anyone else notice the little red line under the 10:00 dot in the 11th frame (the one where the 11:00 dot is missing)? It's starting to bug me. Perhaps some enterprising chap could fix that up for us.
