I have to use a [explitive deleted] windows system here at the office. I used to have weatherbug running all the time to track, well, weather. Now, my employer's illustrious comuter support staff has a killer running that kills WB after about 20 seconds of me starting it. "It can mess up your system BAD," is what I got from the help desk. sheesh "Fine, thank you," I growl. (I am not a nice person, I just play one on TV.)

Anyone know of any "legal" weather tracking apps I can use? I'd like to know if my afterwork plans will be dashed BEFORE I leave the office.....

WeatherBug comes loaded with spyware anyway. I'm not a fan of automatic software-killers like your IT department appears to be using, but you're better off without that.

If you use Firefox, there's a nice extension called ForecastFox which works well. Will that do what you need?

What does it do? I see that it puts up the local temps on the control bar and calls weatherbug when you click on the forcast box. Then the app killer kills it.

They're right, it's crap. I haven't made any rules against it here, but I strongly suggest they don't use it.

When they ask what to use to replace it, I suggest they visit their weather site of choice and enter the zip code.

As an IT support person don't begrudge us for not liking Weather Bug. We are not all a$$ holes about things and do genuinely make recommendations based on our experiences and knowledge on best practices on running a PC. For while Weather Bug is "cute" and useful for the information it provides, it creates real issues with the work trying to be accomplished on PCs. As an alternative I have found and have gotten good reviews from those I've switched to a program called Weather Watcher. Found at the link below. I hope that helps in your quest for a reasonable replacement:

Or better yet the programmers website with the latest beta: http://www.singerscreations.com/RSS/Posts/247.asp

Maybe that program isn't as bad as Weatherbug, but what would be so bad about making a bookmark to a weather website, and just clicking on that? That way you're not putting any unauthorized software on the computer, and avoiding potential problems.

While this isn't the "easiest" way for the user ot access the information, it at least keeps everyone happy. IT is happy and so is the user for they get the weather information they seek.

I love Foxcast. It does everything I could ask for, and without the hassle or security problems of WeatherBug. Foxcast currently queries Accuweather for local data and radar, and you can customize the display to show what you want it to. In my display, pictured below, I have a radar button, which produces a minature picture of the regional radar when you hover over it, the current conditions, forecast conditions (currently not shown because it's after 2 or 3pm), and tonight's forecast. You can have icons or text or both...lots of options.

Now, how to get the IT heathens to let you download and install Foxcast... Maybe you could ask them. It's an extension of the browser and Mozilla stands by it as far as security goes.
