The Data Compression News Blog reports that on July 14th 2005, the name "MP3" celebrates its tenth anniversary. On this day back in 1995, the researchers at Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS decided to use ".mp3" as the file name extension for their new audio coding technology.

/not totally true since I use MP3s all the freaking time, but I've been needing a thread to use this in, and it's close enough -- seeing as how I hope no human being is "celebrating" this birthday.

I can remember the first time I saw an mp3. It was in the fall of 1996. They were still in their infancy as most were all over the place regarding quality and sound volumes.

In a car yes. In a portable music player, yes. On a stereo system at home for the pleasure of listening to music, no.
