Vista = save in Icelandic
I don't think they really care but just thought I'd add to the discussion. Or not.
Ignore me.

Not sure, but you can make your own at http://www.hetemeel.com/hahaform.php
Just crate it, drag it off the site, resize it (for MacNN's wee-little inline image requirements), host it, and post it.

Vista, eh? "A distant view or prospect" sounds like a good description of the project...
Anyway, "Longhorn" was a codename, not a product name, and a real product name would have had to come out eventually. What is going to be interesting is to see if a real product ever comes out...

First there was HiFi. Then there was WiFi. Now, Microsoft presents the world with WiVi.
My favorite Windows abbreviation ever was Windows CE: WinCE. Windows makes me wince.

They can't come up with cool sounding names, they can't design intuitive UI's... but somehow they know how to market.

They must have also consulted the goddammm kabalarians or may be not!
http://www.kabalarians.com/male/vista.htm
The first name of Vista creates a shrewd, aggressive, business nature, intent on personal gain. The desires for independence and financial success have been strong motivating forces from early in your life. You are capable of logical and analytical thinking along practical business lines, and could excel in financial fields, law, or politics. Your judgment is seldom swayed through your feelings.

Other notable name choices were:
- Windows Shasta
- Windows XPS Sport Edition
- Windows Turbo
- Windows Armadillo
- Windows 2010
- Windows Reloaded
And my personal favorite:
-Windows Exodus
( "Windows Genesis" actually sounds kinda catchy. )

Doubtful. Windows XP was a pretty crappy name too, and that didn't hurt it's sales or Windows' market share. The thing about Windows is that it doesn't need a cool name to sell. All that matters is that it's Windows ... everything that comes after (from a marketing perspective) is unimportant.

They wouldn't choose windows Genesis, that would mean Microsoft was siding with those of us who read the Bible... what would be far more politically correct would be "Windows Hot Sweaty Orgy"

Pastor does not equal Priest. I'll be a Pastor in probably a Baptist, Alliance, E Free or something like that church, there's no chance I'd be Anglican or Catholic.

Vista is not a bad name. It is a bit boring and uninspiring in a corporate way, but this is Windows after all. Unlike Apple, Microsoft are not in a position to give Windows a wildlife-themed name ...imagine, Windows Manatee.
