I've always liked the interface of Google Maps, but I've recently noticed that its directions are much worse than Mapquests. For example, I was looking up directions from Oakland California to San Diego California, and Google thinks that taking 101 and having a travel time of more than 9 hours is better than taking 5 and having a travel time of about 7 and a half hours. Has anyone else had the same experience with the two services?

Maybe there is construction. I find GM better than MQ.

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

I've noticed the directions tend to be slightly dubious using google maps in the UK.

I tend to use both GM and MQ and then compare.

Hopefully Google Maps will improve with time. I suppose MapQuest have had much longer to get it right.

Thorin, try the RAC and AA's website for travel directions as well. i hedge towards the AAs site in the route i'd like to take but i do prefer Googles for the user interface.

I wish you could add multiple points on a Google map instead of just 2.

Nivag, I clicked on your link, "Dont Lose The Music" and found this:

Lose yourself at the summer festivals…But Don't Lose The Music

Loo roll, wet wipes, wellies, sun cream, condoms…earplugs?
Most festival-goers know to bring the essentials, but have you thought about adding a pair of reusable earplugs to your list before heading off to the summer music festivals?
I have a new term to add to my vocabulary. Loo roll. (Not to be confused with the legendary R&B, Jazz crooning great, Lou Rawls!)

But, pray tell, what are wellies?

Give petty people just a little bit of power and watch how they misuse it! You can't silence the self doubt, can you?

Both Yahoo! Maps driving directions and Mapsonus.com go straight to I5 instead of the 101. I just checked, and it isn't just you; Google routed me through the 101, as well. Either Google has an issue with the 101, or there's something going on that Google knows about but the others don't. And as much more scenic as the 101 could be over I5, I don't think it's two hours worth of scenic.

mojo, wellies is short for Wellington Boot, not sure what the Americans can them, but they look like this.

more info on them can be found here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wellington_boot

and the thought of using Lou Rawls while in the toilet made me laugh

I think we'd call them "rubber boots." Mucking through the mud is what they're for, right?

I went to a Van Halen concert with my sister in the mid-80s, and we had incredible seats. But the volume was incredible too. I spent the whole concert with my fingers in my ears-and enjoyed the whole thing immensely. Ear plugs are a Very Good Idea!
