Hahaha! It is only because of a vcr that I'm able to answer you as I was online here when the ad ran and I paid no attention to it until it was a few seconds into it. But I was recording it and so I will turn on the tube and find the answer...
BRB and will edit this post to provide the answer.
The same way "Baby Got Back" would begin but here with this ad they're using a sorta Sir Mix-A-Lot sounding guy singing...
"You're...BACK. AT. SCHOOL. andyouneedafewthangs..."
They use a high camera angle shooting down onto a Target Store red (probably done digitally) floor and background. It's a SEA of Target RED. And three kids looks like 3rd or 4th graders dressed in school togs and backpacks are walking from the upper half of the screen towards the center of the frame and they are looking upwards as digitally created school supplies fall from the sky which makes the two little girls and one little guy jump for joy...
"...gotta get you back in the game, get your notebooks and your erasers...Baby I'm Back"
Then the spot pauses with a few seconds of the Target trademark against the red background as though the spot is over (the music stops after he says, "Baby I'm Back"). This would be the :30 sec version aimed at the younger kid's gear.
The commercial resumes with the same song, same theme, sound and feel, but this is now being aimed at older kids for it starts out with an older kid wearing a backpack doing a backflip onto a CG white splash of paint (a rain puddle?) on the Target red background, and The Sir Mix-A-Lot sounding guy singing...
"We like back packs and we cannot lie, with a cell phone pocket on the side..."
Then the older kids dance around with cellphones to their ears, jumping and imitating skateboarding and razor scootering and just sashaying down the street white earbud cables dangling from their heads, ostensibly going to or coming home from school.
And the singer closes with...
"...those old back packs were a fashion risk, but can a cool backpack exist? (Check this) Tricked out with the flyest look and I'm holdin way more than books!...Baby I'm Back. At school that is!"
GREAT SPOT!!!
Just a note, but does anyone else other than I make regular use of the closed captioning function on your TV?
And did you know when you record a show or a commercial that is closed captioned that the CC is also recorded along with the content on the screen. So, in this case, for example, I was able to get the lyrics to the song by simply turning on the cc and just reading what had been very handily provided as a public service to the hearing impaired while playing and re-winding and so on, the Target spot.
