If they are still in there with that much smoke I don't think there is much hope of them making it. Horrible.

Would they risk lives to put out a fire like that if no one was left inside?
I would think they would just stand back if it was empty.
Hope everyone is ok.

Last time I checked, terrorists didn't have weather-control machines.

I don't think they want all evidence to the cause to burn happily or have an explosion take out the busiest highway.

Apparently it was caused by a lightning strike, which caused loss of power.

There were probably some survivors; at least 2 buses were sent to local hospitals after leaving the crash site...

Sad thing. In the live stream above someone claimed that a woman "thought" they got everyone out. Let's hope.
I never feel anything in such situations. I don't know why. I sure know what I am supposed to feel, but it's never authentic. Strange that is.

Yes, I know; I lived in Toronto for 5 years and I still get there by plane often for business. I know the network ot strips is quite complex, but to get there in 50 seconds, I am still quite impressed.
Hopefully there will not be any fatal victims and probably because of the speed that everyone involved reacted; stewards/esses, passengers, rescue guys and all plus volunteers who took some of the passengers who reached the highway to bring them at the hospital.
Crazy; traffic is madness at this time in Toronto...

I think the general rule should be if you have a ditch at the end of a runway it should be filled with pillows.

I'm watching it on MSNBC and it 'kills me' how everyone has a TV presence these days as though they are auditioning for a correspondant's position.
Let's listen for what badidea has to say about this Airbus aircraft. Also, I wonder what goes on at the manufacturer when one of their planes goes down.

I don't know what they consider "minor injuries" but in my book that means no one's gonna be scarred for life by this.

First crash EVER for an A340.
309 passengers. Ball of flame. Everyone lived. I'm impressed, and very relieved.
Those Airbus engineers got their emergency escape planning down right, methinks.
That, and luck, of course.

Perhaps - but still, some therapy should take care of that, and they're still breathing. That's the important thing.

Also today, tens of thousands of people died from AIDS and starvation. But there is no spectacle in that, so nobody notices.

Oh I am so relieved everyone survived!!
I hope everyone will recover fine and my prayers are with them. Damn, the first A340 crash. Good planes, good planes.
It was probably an A340-300
cheers and best wishes

The spectacle of a plane crash is captivating as much for what it might be as for what it is. How many of your relatives travel for a living? How many people do you know in that area of Toronto? How many people were waiting at the airport for that flight and have had to wait for news of what happened to whomever they were meeting?
That is not to discount all the people who died today from whatever cause, but this could easily be personal. Face it, in the West, we don't really understand starvation, and for most of us dying from AIDS is pretty remote too. That doesn't mean we don't believe in those things, just that it's harder to relate. And having been to places where starvation is not that far from the door, and having friends die from AIDS, I still have problems getting my head around those (and other) things.
But an air crash is something I can easily relate to-I've flown, I've supported aircraft maintenance, I have relatives that travel for a living, I've waited for late flights and wondered...It's all about perspective. This event was singular, particularly for such a singular lack of major injury, and that makes it very notable. And while we personally may not be able to do anything more about an airplane crashing than we can about Darfur, we at least can try to be involved with this.

You make it sound as though no one cares. Be informed that many thousands of people, organizations and many governments are working to get rid of both problems! What have you done lately to help others in need of help?

I think this is a normal reaction; some people just want to put the best of themselves out for everyone toi see; in this case, they will use models of news spokeperson to reproduce with waht they think is the most appropriate they can provide.
It also has a drawback for some people whom are into trauma, or shock, that they will fill in a need from the media for accurate and "star-like" behavior. They turn exploited and also psychologically exhausted from repeating a story on and on and on without resolving the issue of their own survival.
These people have stared in the eye of death and they still have to process that. Some of them will require a few weeks.
mojo2, you can laugh, but what you see is actually very sad. And I know you are not doing that to be mean. It's just that there is a lot going on you do not see.

True, and it is just as sad.
One looks more like fate, while the other can be blamed on some other cause. We thrive at looking for causes, although we fail always toim understand them; yet, when they are so instrumental as a plane crash, we want to know, while AIDS is supposedly someone's foolishness.
I understand your point and you are right; spectacles and panavision drama are making us appreciate life in strange ways at times. But these are usually initial reactions. Most people are actually reacting properly after being informed of the situation, whether somes one is dying of AIDS or from a plane crash.
Have Faith kerrigan; it is not so bad...
