I understand that the ISO committee chose QuickTime as basis for it's various MPEG standards. I am a bit confused. QuickTime is a cross-platform architecture, that Apple developed. So how is Apple involved in the development of H.264, AAC and stuff? If I read the Apple websites, it seems (and might seem to others as well) that AAC, H.264 is an Apple format. I'm not meaning an Apple-only format, but just being most pushed and implemented by them.

Is my understanding correct, that Apple's QuickTime technologie is involved in things like the UMD, Sony's wanna-be new standard for media on mobile devices like their PSP? The Fox assets that will come out this fall on UMD will be encoded in H.264 w/AAC. Or is this just an adoption by Sony without any (indirect) involvement of Apple's technology?

I'm quite confused and I'm sure there are some experts of this context around here...
