In the days after President Bush won a second term, the number of U.S. citizens visiting Canada's main immigration Web site shot up sixfold, prompting speculation that unhappy Democrats would flock north.
But official statistics show the number of Americans actually applying to live permanently in Canada fell in the six months after the election
On the face of it this is not good news -- Canada is one of the few major nations seeking to attract immigrants.

My suspicion is that in those events, people entertain the idea fleetingly. The same way we price out systems on Apple's website, or go putting together fancy electronics combinations. Could we do, yeah, we probably could. But how serious are we about it?
The same is the case I think here. We say "If that guy get's elected, I'm leaving the country!" but we've got a job, a family, friends, responsibilities. So we stay, and things probably aren't as bad as we thought they were going to be.
Or like me, you just stay in blissful ignorance.

I would love to move to Canada, but not necessarily because of the election (although it's outcome was not as I had hoped).
My wife was born in Canada and has dual citizenship and I would like for my children to live in their mother's home country for at least a while.
I have also immensely enjoyed the time I have spent there. The only issue is the sticky one of getting a job and working papers.
Maybe someday.

Canada like New York to me is one of those "Nice place to visit, wouldn't want to live there" places.
I've actually been to Canada more than I have New York.
The people in Canada for the most part are nice.

I looked into it a few years back. From what I remember, if you're from any country you basically can skate in. If you're from the U.S., it's much more difficult and expensive.

Hey, which bits of Canada have you visited?
Geographically, I find the US much, much more interesting and appealing than Canada. I love Arizona and Utah. Southwestern landscapes make me wet. I just wish the damn British had moved south along the west coast several centuries ago and "conquered" Washington, Oregon, and California. In exchange, the US could've had Quebec; they would've dealt with the French properly.

My wife works with several nurses here in San Antonio that came FROM Canada because there wasn't enough work for them to get a job. There are TONS of nursing jobs here!
I think most of the people who said they'd move to Canada if Bush was reelected were talking out of some orofice other than their mouths. And the Canadian immigration people said categorically that people wanting to immigrate simply because they were indignant about an election were NOT welcome. To me, that's a very good position; the idea that if you don't like the outcome of an election you will leave the country is pretty whiney.
And with the margin this last election was decided by, it's not like the possibility that George Wallace might have been elected in 1972, which would have meant a lot of Americans supported his hate-filled agenda. Leaving with President Wallace in office would be quite different from leaving because most voters had a hard time deciding who to vote against.

Its not because there isnt enough Nursing Jobs, the pay for Nurses are higher in the US. We have a massive shortage of Nurses right now.

Liberals are an untrustworthy, lying bunch of hypocrites, as evidenced by the fact that hardly any of them made good on their promise and moved north of the border, something a whole lot of those loudmouthed morons were whining about after they were defeated in the past elections.
Certain idiots were proudly linking to certain webpages concerning immigration to Canada, as if webhits is equal to somebody actually getting off of their fat butts and moving there permanently.
When a non-liberal wins the next election, we'll hear the same old whining and moaning from the usual suspects, about how they will now certainly move to Canada, as if the idea has never been talked about before. The only thing that is certain is that 99% of them will once again be full of crap.

It's a shortage of well paid nursing jobs you're experiencing. Not that nurses here are paid "handsomely" by any means, but there's a bigger market component in the pay structure.

It is beyond me why this wouldn't be posted in the political lounge unless the person posting this was banned from it yet still wanted some sort of gratification in posting it.

I'm a liberal and I was against the whole stupid moving to Canada thing... In fact, I only know one liberal who half heartedly said that.
But you know... go you and your broad brushes...

Are you kidding? You need to read the thread again. It wasn't at all hostile until you posted. After seeing how quickly you resort to name-calling, I can see why you were banned from the Pol/War Lounge.
