I don't think it has to be sad. Some marriages outlive their usefulness; whatever the people were supposed to accomplish together (spiritually) might have been accomplished and there might be no other reason to stay together.

OR...

One person's path remains unexplored because they remain yoked to someone who is working through issues at a different place on their path and can't learn the lessons on THEIR OWN curriculum.

If the people simply give up on the relationship after having really giving it their all, then it's less sad for both of them, but really so for the kids.

Agreed. I wish Phil Hartman and his wife had gotten divorced.
