It is one of my best friends birthdays coming up soon (who happens to be a girl), and I don't know what to get her at all. I have very little money being a student, and have always planned to make something as it is far nicer/more personal/ and cheaper, but I'm not doing very well on coming up with ideas. I had one idea of making some kind of book out of canvas, but don't really know where to begin. Anyone have any ideas? What homemade gifts have you people ever given in the past? Any comments will be appreciated.

Thoughtfulness, appropriateness for the recipient, time taken designign and constructing the gift, and several other things go into how a hand-made gift will be received. If you're interested in making a book for her, as in a bound notebook for example, start searching for "book binding." It's not a difficult task, it can be done at home without a lot of effort, and a good job looks fantastic. Here the choice of what fabric to cover the covers with, the size and format of the book and how careful you are in putting it together are the biggies.

It ALL depends on her though.

a book is great idea. like a journal type thing for her to write in.

This is similar to what I'm going to make for my girlfriend. My concept so far is to create a "photo journal" where the left side of the book is for her favorite photos (she loves photography), and the right side will be journal space. I'll be placing her favorite Bible verses and sayings on the right side as well.

I'm still working out the design, but I've still got a little over a month left to go....

One of my female friends gave me a homemade Christmas CD for Christmas complete with her own colorng with color pencils, description of music, and a little note inside. Very thoughful and I still have it today. This was all in college also.
