I was in Hiroshima for the 60th Anniversery this weekend. Very sad, but very positive. Good times. Anyone else happen to be there?

I have a long write up about it on my weblog.

Now back to getting paid to study Japanese....

I was listening to the radio the other day. Apparently when the US sent Japan the declaration telling them to immediately surrender, Japan's reply was not a refusal. America translated one of the words as "reject", but really the word meant "review". So instead of saying "We are rejecting your declaration", the Japanese were really saying "We are reviewing your declaration".

Or the guy on the radio was just crazy. Who knows.

I'd like to see the original Japanese for that before making a judgement.

That sounds like a load of crap, probably a lefty, revisionist radio host or something.

Anyhow, if they were "reviewing" the situation, we merely sped up their "review" process by dropping the second bomb. The enemy is not allowed to "review" anything.

We should send Ward Churchil to Iraq to help us mediate with the insurgents.... I'm sure he'll do a bang up job with his link to Native Americans and he can pull from his own life's struggles as a "native american"... to further the .... the.... you know... cause. Help bring home our soldiers.

Discovery Channel or The History Channel had a program on leading up to it with a program snipet that had many young japan school children not knowing Pearl Habor and believed Americans bombed the country for no reason. The events around and including Pearl Habor never existed in their schooling.

I know the evidence. There's always going to be revisionist liars attempting to rewrite history.
It's the same old crap being recycled, and certain gullible people will fall for it.

:shrugs: I don't know the evidence, but I'm skeptical of the whole matter too till I see the evidence.

I'm extremely skeptical of this right off the bat checking a japanese dictionary for the words Reject and Review you'll see they are completely different and could not be confused. I think this is just playing off the notion that asian languages are very mysterious to most westerners. This is a whole lot of whooey!

Yeah, we managed to crack the entire jap code, but somehow translating one simple word is difficult.

I can't find anything on Google. The guy on the radio was doing a college lecture and had the exact word up on the screen (not that I could see it). He couldn't pronounce it himself but said that anyone who knew Japanese in the crowd probably could.

I was just radio surfing, no idea what station it was on.

I'm really curious to see what that word was. I can't imagine what it could have been. Usually misunderstandings with Japanese people go the other way--they give a vaguely affirmative-sounding response that actually means "no," but Westerners interpret it as "yes."
