He was my favourite of the three major US network anchormen.

The other thread has a confusing title. The "LOLOLLOL" is one part of the confusion...the "rip" is the other. The way to indicate rest in peace is R.I.P. using caps and periods. Otherwise one might think the poster was talking about "rip" as in, "I'm going rip on Peter Jennings."

Sigh, I hate doing this because the other poster DID get the scoop. However, and with no offense to the other poster, I'm posting here.

The news took me by surprise.

He never let on the seriousness of his illness on air.

Even though he was Canadian* I'm saddened.

Wow. I knew he had cancer, but didn't see this one coming. Rest in peace.

We've lost one of the good ones.

I'm trying to watch videos about him on CNN but can't. Anyone else able to watch ANY videos on CNN? I'm on Tiger running Safari 2.0 and have the Windows Media plugin, but no video.

UPDATE: Nevermind, the videos do load, but takes forever and keeps BUFFERING! I'm on DSL too.

My dad used to take a nap in his big recliner everynight after dinner while "watching" Peter Jennings read the news.

Hopefully his family is being comforted.

My prayers go out to the family and friends of Peter Jennings. May he rest in peace.

Not cool.

Peter Jennings was a great person. I don't know much for what he did professionally, I don't make note of this here... I did hear he was kind and generous through his life, and that is more important than anything.

I was listening to Dan Rather (gasp) and he said they both were in their twenties at the time, and walking down the street. They "both" stopped to give a begger a buck, and when Dan carried on his way, he noted that Peter stopped and stayed their speaking with the man for several minutes. It struck me momentarily odd that Dan would walk onward, but if you read into it slightly like I did.

Dan Rather gave zilch and continued walking... why would he say he didn't give a dime? Peter stopped and gave a dollar, and spoke to the man about his life, and showed he really did care about him.

Anyhow, great person. Sorry he died so early of Lung Cancer. He'll be back.

He is the only one of the main news anchors that gave me the impression that he cared and was truthful about the news (be it an illusion or not).
His news were also way more 'international' than the CBS and NBC counterpart. Might well be because he himself was not from the US, or might just be his inclination.
I'll miss him.

Yeah, I loved Peter Jennings. What a handsome and nice guy. He was the kind of guy that any woman would've dated because even at 67 he looked 40.

Such a shame.

Let this be a lesson in not smoking - he blamed his lung cancer directly on smoking.

Lung cancer is rapidly fatal and not very treatable.

Peter Jennings. We all loved you.

Your impressions are validated by the comments of his friends/rivals from the other networks.

Did you listen to the NBC/CBS (or other news) coverage of Peter's passing to extract these comments in order to seem 'insightful?'

If you did, well, that's ok. Every poster deserves to feel intelligent once in a while.

In a related story...

ABC News' Elizabeth Vargas is married to singer/songwriter Marc Cohn. He barely escaped becoming a victim of tragedy and the subject of an ABC NEWS obituary, himself.

Singer Marc Cohn survives being shot in head
1 hour, 9 minutes ago

Grammy-winning singer Marc Cohn was shot in the head during an attempted carjacking after a concert in Denver but survived with only minor injuries, police said on Monday.

Cohn had just finished a performance on Sunday night when a man fleeing on foot from police tried to commandeer the van Cohn was riding in, Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

When the van driver refused to stop, the suspect fired into the vehicle, striking Cohn in the head, although the bullet did not penetrate his skull.

"The bullet hit Mr. Cohn flush in the temple," Jackson said. "He's very lucky it wasn't a fatal shot."

Surgeons removed the bullet protruding from Cohn's skull and released him in good condition Monday morning, Jackson said.

Cohn, winner of the 1991 Grammy for best newcomer and best known for the song "Walking in Memphis," is married to ABC News correspondent and anchor Elizabeth Vargas. They have a 2-year-old son.

Police said the suspect is accused of carjacking another vehicle and is still at large. Jackson said he was fleeing from police after using a stolen credit card and also was wanted for failing to appear in court.

Hey gimme my 1/8 th of an ounce of credit when I deserve it dude!!
I actually listened mainly to what they had to say on NPR (just because I rarely watch TV anyways). I think he was at his best during the pre-Iraq war, asking, albeit with too timid a voice, the right questions about the WMD's dossier. He seemed to be (rightly) skeptical. Some will say it's because he was a 'commie, liberal' or whatnot, but it turned out to be a pretty good position. Luck, intuition, partiality? he only knows. he definitely jumped a few notches in my opinion at that period.
Not sure about his famed 9/11 coverage because I was in not mind to watch TV at that time.

Yeah, everyone dies eventually. (I love the stupidity of those posts) The difference is he could have had 10 or 15 good years more (or longer) HAD HE NOT DIED OF LUNG CANCER. Really people, he did it to himself.
My great-grandmother smoked 50 years and is currently dying of lung cancer. She blames herself, as she rightfully should.
Responsibility - It's a bitch.

I was angry at anything and anyone who was possibly going to prevent W from waging a pre-emptive war on Iraq and I was angry at anything and anyone who was possibly going to prevent W from a second term.

In retrospect, PJ did his job consistently well.

And you can claim your full kilo of credit now.
