For some reason, I just remembered a supa-dorky moment from my childhood.

I was in 3rd grade, and it was show-and-tell day at school.

Kids get up, show some new toy they got. One kid showed a frog in a jar that he had caught. Etc., etc.

Anyways, it's my turn. I walk to the front of the class with a thick stack of accordion paper - a printout from my Apple //e.

I proudly proclaim "This is a computer game I wrote." And I grab the first page of the BASIC code listing and let the rest of the thick ream of paper unravel impressively onto the floor.
No-one laughed. The whole class just gave me that 'I don't get it, he's scaring me' stare.

Man, I was a dork.

That's wasn't a German school, right ?
I have never heard of German schools doing show-and-tell days. For sure, I have never had one in 13 years...

They are trying to catch up. You will be sent a show-and-tell by mail packet any day now.

Please keep it tasteful or they will send a note to your parents.

I confess: I used a roll of dimes to replace a faulty AA battery in a walkman. Bought me me 3 hours of listening...

The game story of the original poster is geeky indeed. Very cool man!

But what else?
We discuss Mac OS X box layouts and "powerbook or iBook - I cannot make a decision" problems. Thats as low level geeky as it can get, isn't it?

I feel sorry for today's kids that are mere wanna-bes when it comes to geekdom. If your first computer came with a mouse and a harddrive, you ain't geek. If you've never punched holes in a 5.25" floppy to make it into a double-sided disk, you ain't geek. If you never waited 8 hours to download warez at 2400 baud, you ain't geek. If you've never used a monochrome display, you ain't geek. And OMG, if you've never used a CLI, you freaking ain't geek.

< Used to program punch cards.
< Fortran
< 5.25" floppies... oh yeah.
< used a paper terminal only, no minitor once
< does the green tinted display count? Terminal at school... I remember printing out pages and pages on the impact printers in the lab. Boy was it LOUD in there...before they got the enclosures.

My geek moment for today was meeting a girl with a T-shirt saying " Women are not like PC's, they wont accept a 3.5 inch floppy!" and telling her in the old days I had a 5.25 Inch floppy.

I forgot to say: very nice story!

I remember when I did my master we used old ibm mainframe computers. These machines had very old 8 (!) inch disk drives (with a neglectable capacity of a few 100 KBytes). The floppys looked like ufos. If I remember correctly that were the first floppies ever sold.
