And why?
My fav is the lemon tree one. It reminds me so much of being a kid and going to someone else's neighbourhood out of town and being freaked out by the green fire hydrants and traffic lights (they are yellow in my town).
In the episode I love the bit with Milhouse and the camouflage outfit
P.S. Save the "Simpsons haven't been funny since season XX"

The one where Homer and Apu go to visit the convenience store guru and they're allowed to ask the 'enlightened one' three questions.

I don't know about best episode, but the best moment is when Homer, troubled by something, finds a halo above his head. Of course he grabs it and take a bite, mumbling,

I also like the lemon tree one. Very well written and played out..
"shake harder son!"
People's favorite episode choices vary, depending on their knowledge of the simpsons, and also general knowledge as there are so many references to current events and such and such.
I also like the following:
* Burn's son Larry (Rodney Dangerfield)
* Homer becomes director of sanitation

Ah, one of the best episodes ever, "Homer Loves Flanders!" So many great bits in that episode, like the whole "Terminator 2" scene of Homer coming out of the hedges, then chasing the car with putters attached to his hands.
Homer: God, if you really are God, you'll get me tickets to that game.
[doorbell rings]
Ned: Heidely-ho, neighbor. Wanna go to the game with me? I got two tick --
[Homer slams the door]
Homer: Why do you mock me, O Lord?
Marge: Homer, that's not God. That's just a waffle that Bart tossed up there.
[Marge scrapes it off into Homer's hands]
Homer: I know I shouldn't eat thee, but... Mmm, sacrilicious.
I'd say either the casino one "$pringfield," or the one where Homer becomes union boss, "Last Exit To Springfield." I've seen them probably a dozen times, and laugh my ass off each time.

My favorite's the really dark episode where the powerplant hires that hard working guy who becomes Homer's mortal enemy, only to eventually die a tragic death and have Homer fall asleep at his funeral with everyone laughing over his grave.
Powerful stuff, right there.

Frank Grimes. Powerful funny if anything, if we put too much of our hearts in satire, it stops being funny. Hard comedy is good comedy.

The best episode, i think. The Plow king is also pretty good.
There are so many priceless moments in so many episodes : kinda hard to choose.
the one were Homer joins the NRA is also quite good. 'See you in hell Dinner plate'.

Naturally I like the Sci-Fi-con-bi-mon-com with Mark Hammil. They do an awesome job making fun of those geeks.
Monorail was my fav years ago along with Homer getting charged with Sexual harassment.
Come to think of it my fav Halloween episode is "stretch dude and clobber girl".

Sexual Harassment, also season six. Seriously, when it comes out I'm not going to do anything but laugh for days on end.
Monorail is easily the funniest episode on all the pre-6 seasons.
Nimoy "Do you even know who I am"
Quimby " I ahh think, weren't you one of the little rascals?"

I almost forgot, THE best Halloween ep is season six (Treehouse of Horror V)
"No beer and no TV, make Homer.... something, something"
"Go crazy?"
"Don't mind if I do!"
Also where Homer travels backward through time and Flanders rules the universe.
"Don't you remember Dad? Flanders is the unspoken lord and master of the universe."
"D'oh!"

It's difficult to pick an individual episode, or even a short list, since the golden era of the show - seasons 3-9 - were so incredibly terrific. FWIW, here is my list of most of the greatest episodes of the show (lists neglects gems from seasons one and two for now):
*"You Only Move Twice" - the family move to Cypress Creek, the planned community of arch-villain Scorpio
*"The City of New York v. Homer Simpson"
*"Homer the Heretic" - Homer forsakes the church for his own spiritual path
*"Rosebud" - Burn's bear Bobo
*"When Flanders Failed" - Ned opens the Leftorium, a store cursed to failure by Homer's wishbone wish
*"Who Shot Mr. Burns"
*"Brother From Another Series" - David Hyde Pierce guest stars as Sideshow Bob's brother Cecil
*"Bart Gets Famous" - the "I didn't do it" boy
*"Marge vs. The Monorail"
*"Bart the Murderer" - Bart joins the mob
*"Lisa's Pony" - Homer takes a night shift at the Kwik-E Mart to pay for Lisa's pony
*"Flaming Moes" - It's really the Flaming Homer, and the secret ingredient is cough syrup!
*"Radio Bart" - Using Homer's birthday present, Bart fools the town into thinking there's a boy trapped in a well
*"Homer at Bat" - Mr. Burns' baseball team
*"Kamp Krupsty"
*"Itchy & Scratchy: The Movie"
*"Mr. Plow"
*"Homer's Triple Bypass"
*"Brother From the Same Planet" - Homer and Bart take advantage of the Bigger Brothers association
*"Last Exit to Springfield" - "Dental Plan. . . Lisa needs braces!" "Dental Plan. . ."
*"Homer's Barbershop Quartet" - Homer, Skinner, Apu and Barney's 1980's group
*"Boy Scouts N The Hood" - Bart accidentally becomes a boy scout; Bart, Homer and Flanders go on an ill-fated canoe trip
*"Homer the Vigilante" - Homer organizes a neighborhood watch to catch the nefarious Cat Burglar; an "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" parody
*"Homer and Apu" - Homer gets Apu fired
*"Deep Space Homer" - Homer becomes an astronaut
*"Bart Gets an Elephant" - the adventures of Stampy
*"Lisa's Rival" - New girl in town surpasses Lisa's achievements, so Lisa plots to ruin her
*Itchy and Scratchy Land" - the animatronic Itchy and Scratchy units go haywire
*"Lisa on Ice" - Lisa and Bart compete in hockey
*"Homer: Bad Man" - Homer is charged with sexual harassment but is rescued by Groundskeeper Willey
*"Fear of Flying" - Marge's phobia
*"Homer the Great" - the Stone Cutters
*"Homie the Clown" - Homer goes to clown college and is mistaken for the real Krusty by the mob
*"Two Dozen and One Greyhounds" - Santa's Little Helper's puppies are stolen by Burns
*"Lemon of Troy" - the lemon tree
*"Radioactive Man" - Bart and Milhouse contest the ownership of a rare comic
*"Bart Sells His Soul" - . . . to Milhouse, in exchange for $5
*"Treehouse of Horror VI" - 3D Homer
*"King-size Homer" - Homer's plot to gain enough weight to be eligible for work-from-home disability
*"Two Bad Neighbors" - President G.H.W. Bush moves to Springfield
*"Bart the Fink" - Bart gets Krusty in tax-evasion trouble
*"Bart on the Road" - Bart's fake I.D. leads to a cross-country misadventure
*"The Curse of the Flying Hellfish" - Grandpa and Bart resist Burns' sinister attempt to steal masterpieces sealed away in WWII
*"Homerpalooza" - Homer becomes a sideshow attraction to impress the kids
*"The Springfield Connection" - Marge joins the Springfield police department
“Cape Fear” - a Sideshow Bob parody of the classic film
“Homer vs. Sexual Inadequacy” (title altered) - Grandpa gives Homer his secret aphrodisiac formula and later admits that Homer was an accident
*“Bart’s Comet” - Bart unexpectedly discovers a comet that threatens Springfield
*"Burns, Baby Burns" - the immortal Rodney Dangerfield as Burns' bastard son
*"The Mysterious Voyage of Homer" - Space Coyote: Find your soul mate, Homer. Find your soul mate"
*"The Springfield Files" - Mulder and Scully investigate Homer's alleged close encounter
*"The Twisted World of Marge Simpson" - Marge becomes a pretzel vendor
*"Mountain of Madness" - Homer and Burns get cabin fever after an avalanche seals them in
*"The Canine Mutiny" - Bart's credit card fraud puts Santa's Little Helper in jeopardy
*"The Secret War of Lisa Simpson" - Bart is sent to military school, and Lisa unexpectedly decides to go too
*"Lisa the Skeptic" - Angel fever hits Springfield
*"Realty Bites" - Marge's integrity ends a potentially lucrative career in real estate
*“Bart Carny” - the carnie folk Cooter family squat in the Simpson home
*”The Joy of Sect” - Homer commits the family to the Movementarian cult
*”Dumbbel Indemnity” - Moe must choose to go off with his GF or save Homer
*”The Trouble With Trillions” - The Feds enlist Homer to find the trillion dollar bill stolen by Burns after WWII; the bill ends up in the hands of Fidel Castro
*”Lost our Lisa” - Lisa deceives Homer and Marge in order to see a museum exhibit
*”Bart the Mother” - Bart saves the eggs of a bird he shot; particularly notable for being Phil Hartman’s last episode (which preceded the precipitous decline in quality of the show)
*”Mayored to the Mob” - Homer guards the mayor and Mark Hamil
*”Mom and Pop Art” - Homer’s fit of rage makes him an outsider art star
*”They saved Lisa’s Brain” - Lisa worries she will lose her intelligence in the next few years, based on partially erroneous statements by Grandpa

Thank you so much for the compliment. It took me a good hour to compile this list, but it's something I've wanted to do for a while, so it's time well spent.

No problemo
Its come to a point that me and my best friend, Andy, quote parts that aren't even funny, laugh at the most minute details (like the way Moe is drawn at some angles). Maybe its sick, but this show just might be the single greatest entertainment franchise I've experienced, or will experience, in my lifetime.

Oh an interesting side-note. I consider the animation in the third season to be the best. Its wicked roundy, Homer looks much more plump and everyone's eyes are massive and bulgy.

That's a very cool coincidence - one of my best friends is also an Andy, and we used to quote from the show back and forth extensively, back during the greatest years. Of course, where I diverge from the mainstream of Simpsons addicts is on the subject of seasons 11 through the present. I believe one of the greatest shows in T.V. history has been thorougly debased by the utter crap that has been churned out season after season. . . . That's an interesting observation on season 3 animation; that's a matter I will have to examine.

One of my favorite things is when Homer says:
Marge, you're getting in the way of my lifelong dream to manage a beautiful country singer (or other various funny things)
I'm not a huge watcher of the show, but the one with Stampy was pretty funny.

1. 'You Only Live Twice' - "Sugar eh? Here you go - sorry it's not in packets... want some cream?" "Ye... no."
2. 'Homer the Great' - "I saw weird stuff in that place last night. Weird, strange, sick, twisted, eerie, godless, evil stuff... And I want in!"
3. 'Lisa's Rival' - "In America, first you get the sugar, then you get the power, then you get the women..."

the one where homer decides to set up an internet company. best bits:
homer providing IT support to comic book guy who does into a long techno-babble "....modem... ...ISDN line... ....bandwidth.... etc. etc" homer looks completely bemused throughout the whole spiel and then at the end says "can i have some money now?"
there's also the bit where homer reveals the new simpsons web page, replete with every revolting clipart graphic and flashing text known to man and then says [something like] "you'd think with so much going on it would be annoying.."
how many simpsons series are there anyway. i'm sure they show the same three or four series over and over again this side of the pond. when the traditional cry of "simmys time!" goes up at 6pm every evening in our house, i usually rush to the telly to find an episode i've seen about a dozen times already - yet loads of the favourite episodes you lot have described above sound completely unfamiliar to me.

Same here. They only seem to show seasons they have already released (1-5) and the newest of the seasons, its quite unfortunate because in order to see all those golden 7,8,9 episodes you have to wait till they are released
I swear the "American Idol" Simpsons has been on about 4 times in the last 2 months...

Bart gets an elephant.
"Doh" - Homer, "A Deer." - Marge, "A female deer."- Lisa
And does anyone else listen to the director's commentaries on the DVD's and laugh almost as much to the comments as the original soundtrack? Or is it just me being really nerdy?
