Prompted by zigzag's passing I have decided to announce this idea publicly that it might be adopted like the orphan it now is and find a home where it can be cared for and nurtured and developed to be everything it can be.

For many years I've wondered how my far flung friends and my "internet only" friends would find out what became of me were I to suddenly leave this plane. There are certain things I'd want known. Certain things I'd want to say. Certain people I'd want notified.

Most people have a family or friends who will do this or maybe an executor or an attorney.

But what does one do when they don't want their friends or family involved in dispatching messages to this one or that one? Questions would be asked and the people I cared for who were still living might not appreciate the hassles. And the money it would take for this to be done the right way is the same kind of $$ that only a well to do professional might have or a wealthier person might actually devote to having an attorney perform.

There needs to be a notification service that anyone can subscribe to and use for free basic notifications by email. And for a fee other services could be rendered. The name of this service might be NOTIFYI (Notification & FYI), or something to that effect.

Eventually, every legal jurisdiction on earth would report every officially recorded death to NotiFYI and any decedant's NotiFYI account would then be triggered to send any and all of that person's pre-arranged notifications by mail, email, fax or telephone.

There are quite a few other uses for this service while a person is alive, too. There are several ways to develop revenue from this core idea.

The things that have prevented my taking advantage of the concept are that I haven't the technical know how to set this system up. I'm not well capitalized and until now the caution I excercised in sharing the idea with anyone who might assist in developing it has been successful in keeping them from taking the idea, but it has also retarded it's progress.

An idea like this should be most profitable to the first company that rolls it out IF they are smart enough to think it through as extensively as I have and if they have big enough pockets to set up the system and get agreements from a majority of the jurisdictions in whatever geopgraphic area we're talking about.

For example, if Company A is able to get signed agreements with 95% of the Dept. of Records in the US then anyone trying to take Company A's business won't have a chance.

It is crucial to roll it out fast and widely.

This is now up to someone with brains and $ to run with.

I am available to consult PM me for info or questions.

In our will and "when I die" box, I have instructions telling my wife (or whomever) to email the guys at The Iconfactory and Panic and let them know I keeled over. There's also an attachment that will be emailed with a page I created to be uploaded to my site. All the necessary logins, etc., and in this file, and I explain what I'd like done.

If I keel over later in life (30 years or longer), I'll have the proper names changed and stuff.

How can I get your wife (or whomever) to do the same for me?

Do I take it you don't feel a need exists for this service?

I just picked the guys at the IF & Panic because I've known them for a dadgum long time, have a great relationship with them, and they have web sites that get lots of hits. It's be a quick and dirty way for me to get the news out.

As to who you could use, you don't know anyone you could leave instructions with? I mean, in your will, yo could simply tell the executor to send an email to MacNN or whatever's popular over the years.

A service for this? Too hard to maintain and it can be done free, privately.

Of course you are probably right and I may simply be self-referencing, thinking there are millions of people like me, who would not only WANT this kind of no emotional dependency based, less costly and less complex way of sending emails after they/I/we are gone, but who NEED this simple inexpensive service.

Hmmm, I'm thinking about another crazy counter-intuitive business idea...

Now Mr. Smith, a man would have to be a MOron to run a delivery service by flying ALL the packages from EVERY city to Nashville before delivering them to the right city.

A package from New York to Boston goes thru Nashville?

It'll never work.

They have a service to put your songs back into iTunes from your iPod and charge from $1.50 per song or $150.00 You can do this for free sure, but they are in business so, this idea of mojo2 can't be a bad idea... Is anyone doing it? I know they have one for celebreties listed above. I checked it out for "James Doohan".. wow.

So, it's not a bad idea for a business. A great one if it can be automated through the web and with templates along with online payment. Nothing to do but count the mula.

Well, notifyi.com is taken. But .net, .info, .org and a few others are available.
