my mom is making me write these stupid thank you cards (i hate formalities) even though i have already said thank you. anyways... to the point. what should i write to my grandparents saying that their contributions made it possible for me to get my powerbook and being sincere i guess. when i write anything it tends to come out a bit stern.

Just say that you want to tell them how grateful you are for their generosity. Then tell them that they made it possible for you to get your fantastic new PowerBook.
Then rave about the PB for a page or two. They won't understand a word of it, but they'll see that you're truly stoked over it.

Dear Nana & Tata,
I will continue writing thank you cards for the thoughtful gifts you provide me just so long as you continue sending the thoughtful gifts. After all, mom and dad didn't raise no dummy!
OR...
Dear Nana & Tata,
Thanks so much for helping me get my new Powerbook. I know your days of being able to earn more money have ceased and you now must live on a fixed income, so any expenditure must be considered carefully. That you care enough about my happiness, well being and education to expend any money for little old me is truly an act of love and speaks more eloquently to me than a pair of sox or a stupid college fund.
I don't know what I have possibly done to deserve your love and generosity but I hope I will always remember the gratitude that I feel at this moment for your gift and that I will always strive to do the best I can in school and try to be the best person I can be and in that small way I will be honoring your belief in me and showing you the love I feel for you, in the only way I can until I graduate College and am a responsible taxpaying citizen.
I am lucky to have Grandparents as wonderful as you (not like my OTHER Granparents! ) and if there is anything I look forward to is looking into your eyes as you are filled with pride at my accomplishments to come.
My triumphs, in no small way, will also be your triumphs!
P.S. Is there any way you could afford to help me get a new Airport card???
