Designer vaginas

Dr. Matlock is a colourful pioneer in a controversial — and growing — frontier of plastic surgery: nipping and tucking vaginas. Patients from the United States and more than 30 other countries pay thousands of dollars for his “designer vagina,” a purely esthetic procedure that includes shortening or plumping up the labia, or vaginal lips. He attracts even more women for an operation he claims improves sex by tightening, or “rejuvenating,” the vagina.

“There's a need for this,” he said. “Women are driving this. I didn't create this market, the market was there.”

Oh and here's the pic:

Just the thing for those with money and vanity. Some of those are done for medical reasons. Important to realize that there are serious risk with any surgery.

The trend has even reached girls as young as 15. In the past 18 months, the number of teens — and in one case an adolescent and her mother — who come to Dr. Matlock for designer vaginas has doubled.

15? i think that if a girl is worried that her vagina doesn't look sexy enough at 15, there is a problem. how would she even know what a sexy vagina looks like? And a mother/daughter package!

Exactly! How sad it is that people are so insecure that they're worried about what their vaginas look like!

I saw this on TV about 5 years ago. The men paying for it were disgusting in the interviews.

Some women have the procedure becuse they have a distended labia and are embarassed about it. It's essentially no different than getting a rhinoplasty because one is self-conscious about their nose, or a face lift, etc.

Cosmetic surgery. No big deal.

Cosmetic surgery is a big deal in my book. Many cosmetic surgical procedures are pretty significant operations, and there's always the risk of just the anaesthesia too.

I'm referring to the reasons people have for the surgery, not the risk. People are tittering and are puzzled about why anyone would do such a thing; I'm saying people have their reasons, and the reasons are not necessarily invalid or superficial.

Meh. I guess living in LA for a while made me jaded. The LA Weekly has cosmetic surgery ads on every single page, including the "vaginal rejuvination" specials.

While there are certainly plenty of patients for purely aesthetic reasons, there are also lots of women from cultures that have a medieval double standard about female sexuality. If a women isn't a virgin on her wedding night, there can be HUGE cultural (and financial) implications. Some of these surgeries are intended to mask that a women isn't a virgin before such a wedding.

They talked about this on some sex show on the Discovery (Health?) Channel a while back. This guy's wife wanted surgery because she didn't like the way her vagina looked, while the guy was indifferent about the surgery, not seeing a problem. After the "rejuvination", the guy was very happy. Apparently the added tightness made sex 10 times better for him.

more women nowadays watch pornography and have an idea of what other vaginas look like / what a "nice" vagina looks like. so they feel uncomfortable and "need" the surgery.

Which is worse, the cultural standards or the fact that the women are surgically altering their vaginas in order to deceive their husbands?

This is disturbing.

I have no problem with repairing the effects of a botched episiotomy, but as for cosmetic enhancement:

I've always appreciated the differences.

Are you serious? Deceive their husbands?

The hymen can be breached without having had sexual intercourse. Riding, sports, etc all can be a cause. It was common practice in Spain for mothers to give their daughters a needle before their wedding night so she could prick a finger in order to bloody the sheet.

As TF said, otherwise there might very well have been serious consequences for both the woman and her family.

Yeah, but you you don't need a hymen to tell if you were the first one in there or not.

The majority of customers for this service are NOT from non-western cultures. They are Americans who have some odd notion that what they came with naturally is not good enough. A natural vulva (that's the EXTERNAL part, which is what they usually alter, by the way) has a wide range of natural variation, and that variation is-at least to me-part of the pleasant difference between two individuals. I never met one I didn't like!

There are billboards around San Antonio for a "cosmetic gynecology" practice here. What a racket! They probably also have a tie-in with a breast augmentation practice around here. In my experience (limited in scale, but less so in scope), EVERY woman's vulva is beautiful. Unless there's some sort of dysfunction going on, why mess with something that works?
