Apple loses patent to Microsoft.
Apple Computer may be forced to pay royalties to Microsoft for every iPod it sells after it emerged that Bill Gates's software giant beat Steve Jobs' firm in the race to file a crucial patent on technology used in the popular portable music players. The total bill could run into hundreds of millions of dollars.
I have a feeling that some attorneys at Apple may be looking for work with another company after this mistake.

I doubt it.
A lot of patents don't make it first time. They'll try again and will get it.

Oh, and I wouldn't plan on assuming that Apple will win this one. I'm not so sure about that. Microsoft's lawyers are infamously adept at winning.

Doesn't matter if Microsoft filed first. Apple already has a product out in the market before the patents were filed.
