As you know if you read like every post I make, you'll know I'm working on video stuff for my church (actually the church I'll be interning with this year) and I'd given them QT Movies straight from FCE (compressing takes to long and this way we keep quality). Anyway I stopped by the church the other day with a CD of the promotional video with some changes. Our senior pastor then mentioned how he'd bought QT Pro, he said, "Well I use it enough, and I knew you were an Apple guy and you'd be doing stuff and I wanted to go full screen."
I was like... wow... I wonder how much money Apple makes off of Quicktime Pro. I didn't have the heart to tell him that iTunes will play the video full screen... we'll just keep that between us .

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but you're saying that Apple limits the standard version of QuickTime so as to make more money off of QuickTime Pro?

For shame!

You get a brown star.

No what I'm saying is that some people actually will drop the 40 bucks CND to get full screen and don't see a big problem with it. Where as I personally refuse to spend so much on QT Pro or right now can't justify it. Especially when I can get other apps to do it for me.

Expensive, yes, but it's necessary to cover most codec's licensing fee.

However I still think it's dumb to make Full Screen Pro only. Full screen without on-screen controller would be better for non-Pro version.

Just get the free QuickTime Amateur.

QTAmateur is a small, simple QuickTime video player. It can play any format that QuickTime can understand, handle fullscreen video playback, and export files to any format that QuickTime can write.

QTAmateur includes a Batch Export function which can convert any number of movies at a time to another format. Simply drag the desired movies into the window, choose the desired format, configure the output, and let QTAmateur take care of the rest.

Sorry, QTAmateur can't export Protected AAC files purchased from the iTunes Music store.

Best of all, QTAmateur is completely free.

QTAmateur requires QuickTime 7 and Mac OS X 10.3.9 (Panther).

QT Pro costs money to take care of the license fees for the encoders.

The rest of you can just use AppleScript: http://www.xvsxp.com/scriptability/applescript/

You could also use the Dashboard widget so conveniently linked-to in my signature...

I've always found this ridiculous and wrong. Quicktime is an integral part of the Mac OS, as described by Apple itself, going back to the Classic era all the way to the latest version of Mac OS X. If Apple wants to limit "Pro" features, that allow people to create content that's one thing, but to limit full screen mode is ridiculous, and it makes the Mac look bad compared to other PCs-- Paying extra for a standard feature on that other platform, specially considering that the Mac is known for video editing work. Imagine that... it just makes our platform look bad.

Not to mention those horrible advertisements... are those still going on? I had a Windoze bot point the QT ad once when I was showing a group of people something on my Powerbook... "Look, they put ads on your computer!"...again making the Mac look bad.

They could include the pro features right into the OS, but then they'd have to roll the licensing fees in too, increasing the cost for thousands (millions) of people who don't want or need QT pro.

Yes but full screen costs them no money.

And sadly our pastor uses a PC. But yah no I'd sooner just use VLC, iTunes, Playlist Player etc.

I agree, Apple's policy on this is stupid.

However, like I said you can use QT Amateur for full screen playback as well as file export (including to H.264).

Basically, the guy just took all the main features of QT Pro built into OS X and put his own GUI around it and offered it up as freeware.

MaxPower2k3's full screen QT widget rocks too.

You can also use OS X's built-in zoom. Go into System Prefs | Universal Access and turn on Zoom. Then you can presss Option-Command-Plus or Minus to zoom in and out.

You're clearly smarter than that pastor of yours.

Smarter? No. Technologically literate yes. One of the major reasons I applied for the internship is because there's a lot I can learn from this guy. He's a very gifted preacher, and exceptional motivator... actually reminds me of Jobs a bit in that regard... guess it might help that his name is Steve

Wait...so it took you like three years to work out that they made Full-Screen mode QT Pro-only in order to sell tens of thousands of QT Pro licenses to people who have absolutely zero need for any of QT Pro's other functions?

I already have QT Pro and now I'm going to see which one I use more frequently or which one performs better.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Nice review, Eug!

Actually... yes, the one I've done so far was to drum up buzz and help convince people to join on as volunteers for our VBS (Vacation Bible School) program. It's a massive ministry we do every summer for a week, this year's theme is "Extreme Makeover Heart Edition." Basically we have a live band that plays for the kids while they sing along and stuff, crafts, games, and a story time. Takes about two hours a day as far as the kids are there for. Last year out of a church with about 250 people on an average Sunday we had 80 volunteers, and 250 kids in total (that includes kids that only showed up for one or two days on average we had about 212 kids per day).
But we'll also do videos for other parts of the service, as sermon illustrations that sorta thing. And odds are with me interning there now that they'll have someone who they can give a big video project to we'll see a fair number more of these things
