So I'm at Blockbuster yesterday, and their P.A. kicks in and starts blah-blah'ing about "Teh End of Late Fees." I'm down with the program and all, but...

P.A. voice-over chick begins explaining how the system works [I'll paraphrase here, since I was rather st0ned at the time and can't remeber the whole schpeil]:

I, roy.rogers, can rent ANY movie in the store, watch it as many times as I want, and return it in seven days without being charged a late fee. EXCEPT, of course, if the box is marked "2-Day Rental;" if said box is marked accordingly, the movie must be returned two days later (by noon, natch).

HUH!?!?!

If they've done away with late fees, where did this 2-day thing come from? Do I get the movie for only two days (and get charged a late fee if it ain't back in two days (by noon)), or do I get it for seven days?

Man--how can they phuq up no late fees?

::shrugs::

Semantics man.... they still screw you. It's just that now its called a "restocking fee". If you go pass the "due date", you've bought the movie (i.e. they charge your credit card). But you can still bring it in and get a "refund" minus the restocking fee.

At least that's how the one by my house works.... gotta love Comcast in-demand.

Well, that's NOT how it works at Bluckbuster's here.

From my experience, you have at least 1 week AFTER due date before they assume you want to buy the movie. You have one month from date of rental to go back and return the movie, and get your money back because you really didn't wanna buy it. You might be charged a restocking fee ($ 1 or so), but that's it.

I have returned countless movies way late (3 weeks or so), even 2 day rentals, and I was never even charged the restocking fee. So I don't know why your BB sucks...

none of the above. i may ppv every now and then, or watch it on cable movie channels. i don't rent or download. i can wait till it comes out on cable; i simply make a list of movies that interest me. hell, i can't remember the last time i even went to a theater (i have my own, so i wait). buying the dvd is cheaper then going to a movie (for two people).

i use to rent when i lived at home some 15 years ago but i don't anymore. i'm just suprised they are still in business. don't see any more mom and pop ones though.

just picking on ya all

^^^ Well, see, I don't have cable, and I don't need it. I prefer to go to the movie theater, it's only $ 6.50. Every once in a while (once per month), I'd rent a movie that I missed at the theaters.

'cause they can be I presume. Its a new strip mall that has a "snobby" feel about it... Aside from the Giant grocery store, everything else there is overpriced.

i am glad i dont work at blockbuster anymore, it was bad enough getting people to pay late fees or as we were supposed to call them "extended viewing fees" but try to get people to pay them with that whole "No More Late Fees" - i just rent from the local grocery stores video department - its half the price of blockbuster anyways

I try to avoid Blockbuster now as much as possible... I used to rent from them, until DVD hit. When DVD hit, the local store down the street jumped on it, but the Blockbuster refused to carry any DVDs whatsoever. I asked the guys who worked there, and they said their head office wouldn't sanction it. This went on for years.

By the time they finally figured out DVD was here to stay, a big chunk of its customers had defected to the store down the street. That particular Blockbuster ended up going out of business.

Not all Blockbusters are the same. Blockbuster has bought a lot of other chains, which don't necessarily follow the same policy when it comes to late fees. A friend of mine works at one that isn't participating in the "end of late fees" at all. Pisses a lot of people off.
