Now that I'm returning to university, I have family members who are clamoring for new Macs, but they want to exploit my education discount.

If I purchase several Macs (3-5) using my education discount, will Apple mind if the Macs are registered to other users (i.e., friends and family)?

Only ONE computer per year... as many iPods as you can carry though.

They care.

I think you can only purchase one computer per academic year. So that won't work.

Er...I doubt they'll even know. It's not as though there's anything in the agreement that prevents you from selling or giving the computer away as a gift anyway.

On the other hand, you realize that Apple limits your number of edu discount purchases, right?

Faculty, Staff and Students purchasing from the Apple Store for Education Individuals will be allowed to purchase the following quantities of product per academic school year:

1. Desktop: One (1) may be purchased per academic year
2. Mac mini: One (1) may be purchased per academic year
3. Laptop: One (1) may be purchased per academic year
4. Display: A maximum of two (2) may be purchased per academic year
5. Software: A maximum of two (2) per software title may be purchased per academic year
6. iPod: One (1) per iPod family (iPod, iPod mini, iPod Shuffle 1GB, iPod Photo) may be purchased per academic year (Note: there is no quantity limitation on iPod Shuffle 512MB)
7. iSight: One (1) may be purchased per academic year

Okay, I just found this in the Apple Education Store agreement:
Purchase Quantity
Eligible purchasers will be allowed to purchase one each of the following per academic school year: PowerBook or iBook; iMac; eMac; Power Macintosh G4 or G5; iPod. Two Displays and two copies of each software title on the Apple Store for Higher Education Individuals.
Does that mean I can buy more than one Mac, but not more than one of the same model of Mac? So could I buy an iMac and a Powerbook without incurring the wrath of Apple?

If you wanted the same model more than once, you could try and get them at your university bookstore. Most of the time they'll have no problem with it.

Sort of. They seem to have changed the rules on this from when I was in college: back then it was only one Mac per year. Now it looks like they'll give you one desktop (presumably PM, iMac, or eMac), one laptop (PowerBook or iBook), and one Mini per year, assuming you can afford that much.

At the campus computer store I worked at, there was no limit to how many Macs a student could purchase at the academic price.

Yeah actually that's not a bad deal. It's better than I can get from CDW or Insight, even if our rep offers to sell it at their cost.

As for Applecare, my G5 is going to get Applecare for no other reason than that damn chirping power supply.

I find a much much much much much better deal on ebay. Get something about 6 months-12 months old, save a boatload. >shrug< Sorry about your G5 problems, I doubt I'll ever get a G5 since they've been so flakey since they came out. I think I'll wait for the pentium versions of the new thing a year or two from now.

It's just as good a deal as getting a free iPod — either way, you're $300 richer than you would be otherwise.
