Go into Walmart, but biggest one you can for 150.
No need to make sure it'll work forever since its gonna get beer spilled on it anyways

Don't get a good TV. You don't want your room to be the community gathering place for video games and movies. If you allow that to happen your stuff will get trashed, stuff will get stolen, everything will smell like smoke, and it will be full of people's garbage after they leave.
Someone else on your floor will get the 32" Wega and you can go in there and do all that sh!t.
Just have a TV for the occasional show you need to watch and when you want to invite some broad to watch a movie late night.

If anything, a cheap walmart tv will do.
Toshiba makes a damn nice 13" otherwise, just don't show it off

Want to watch TV? Get a satelite dish, put it on top of the dorm, run the line down and then get El Gato / EyeTV.. record and watch TV on the Mac.

Go to Best Buy -- they have a bunch of little TVs, many of them much cheaper than Sony (e.g. Toshiba) with nice features (like lots of inputs) or built-in DVD players.

TV is crap - such a waste of your time. Not only will you be happier since you actually get work done but you will find that there are many other more stimulating things to do in life.

The elgato USB (or firewire) ones are a great idea. You can carry that with a PB and then stick it in your bag when you walk off, makes theft and vandalism MUCH harder

I was dealing with this same problem back in January... my school finally got cable in the dorms.
I picked up a $80 Toshiba 13" tv... serves me fine. My one bit of advice would be to get one with a stereo headphone port (mono is damned annoying).

Don't try to outweird me, I get stranger things than you free with my breakfast cereal.

I wish you success with finding an affordable TV that will fit your dorm room needs. A good idea to shop around.

As I said, Toshiba and others have great little TVs -- I've been eyeing one for the kitchen. 13" flat CRT, with stereo in/out and S-video and component inputs for $130.

Are you sure about that? I thought those analog converters are too slow for video games.

I bought a 14" Advent from Best Buy last year for basically the same purpose for around $100. I didn't care that it was an 'off' brand, and it actually has some really neat features, like component video in and stereo sound.
I agree with shopping around.

their web site says so. the eyetv usb2 does not have any hardware compression abilities and therefore has no lag. someone in the peripherals forum has one and uses it as such.

I don't get this. Aren't there any locks on the doors or what ? If you don't want people in your room then just say no. It isn't that hard.

If you're living in a double or a quad then I don't think there are usually locks inside the individual rooms themselves. And it's harder to get a single if you're a freshman, if that's what air is.
And about the EyeTV... according to the FAQ for the USB (and also the firewire one, which I'm eyeing):
Q: Can I connect my PlayStation/GameCube/XBox to EyeTV?
A: You can, but playing on the EyeTV display won't be much fun since the MPEG decoding mechanism currently employed by EyeTV introduces a delay of about 1.5 seconds. In other words, it always takes about 1.5 seconds before the results of a game controller command are displayed in the EyeTV window. EyeTV is a great solution to record your gameplay though.

Here is a question from the EyeTV USB2 Wonder FAQ, the model I mentioned since it is the only one with this ability.
"Q: Can I connect my PlayStation/GameCube/XBox to EyeTV Wonder USB 2.0?
A: You can. EyeTV Wonder USB 2.0r has a delay of only few milliseconds, allowing for excellent live gameplay. Other EyeTV devices have encoding hardware that causes a larger delay, rendering gameplay difficult to impossible. "
