I am having issues with my MediaWiki installation. I moved the database and all the files from one server to another. Everything should work in theory, the database loosk right, the config files were changed, but the Wikipage does not want to load. When I go to the index page I get the message

"Too many redirects occurred trying to open “mediawiki page”. This might occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another page which then is redirected to open the original page."

I was trygin to find a MediaWiki support forum, but i cannot. Does anyone know such a place?

Thanks,

t

Alright... I found an irc channel on the following page
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Communication

They helped me out there. My problem was the with the apache api differences between the two servers. The new server uses cgi and becasue of this the urls are handled differently (no rewrites). There was a setting in the LocalSettings.php file that had to be switched and now everything works.

Thought I would share my findings. :-)

NetMusician,
I've found your help to be very insightful. I just starting playing with mediawiki. I've been reading a lot- and see that the possibilities are endless- but I've been having trouble getting some simple tasks off the ground.

Right now, I have a few basic questions in regards to customization: How do I apply my own skin? I went to a gallary, copy and pasted example css into a new file, named it myskin, dropped it into the myskin folder in the skins directory and tried selecting myskin from the preferences in my wiki site. Did not seem to work.

Also, how can I individually pick the css to apply to various pages (main page has one css and other pages have their own css).

Feel free to browse my wikis:

Hey Surfer,

I've never applied my own skins, but I've investigated doing so enough to know that Mediawiki is not like a CMS or even a Blog where editing the header/footer templates is as easy as simply editing a header/footer PHP file.

Moreover, the database structure seems a little awkward, so it seems hard to extract pages generated from Mediawiki onto pages external to the Wiki. I get the sense that Mediawiki was designed to function as its own entity, sandboxed from other pages belonging to your domain name.

I might be mistaken, I'm just working from my best recollections...

Were you looking for something more like a CMS?

I've played with things a little more since my post, and I figured out how to skin it. Now, my biggest bug is the email function. On MediaWiki's website, when you look at user pages, you see links that say: email this user. This link is not present on my site. Don't know why. I am trying to upgrade to the latest MediaWiki build to see if that helps.

Do you have any idea what I am referring to?
