Apple has secured the supply of PPC CPUs made by motorola until 2008.

They are speculating that this contract may be made for maintaining long term server installations by Apple.

But interesting nonetheless. Somehow I'd still love to see dual core PPC G4 PowerBooks.

Eh, I'd be willing to bet there's more to the contract than just ensuring that AppleCare orders are fulfilled. Somehow I doubt that Freescale would refuse small shipments of processors to Apple for repairs without a contract. I suspect this is more Apple wanting to cover their ass incase the Intel transition doesn't go as swimmingly as they're wanting to make it look like it's going to.

And I'd love to see an 8641D notebook before the Intel switch as well. We'll see though...

My thinking, too. Maybe there are even some products with Freescale CPUs that were not introduced. Ok, that's unlikely, but possible, is it?

A dual core G4 with 1.5+ GHz might exactly be what can fill the gap until Intel goes PowerBook. Did freescale announce when it is is supposed to ship (as far as you can rely on that statements by motorola...)?

If Apple wishes to preserve its relationship with the PPC world, one would assume IBM would be the one to placate.

Maybe they're storing up for Winter. Or maybe its just for all those pesky repair jobs that will come in. I'm guessing the later.

This is for service parts only. There will be no PPC macs sold in 2008. People are foolish for thinking otherwise.

Okay, Mr. Insider Information.

Fact is, nothing is certain. And with the Steve having said that Apple 'hoped' to be done with the transition by the end of 2007, it could easily go into 2008.

Huh, you mean me? The news was on Heise.de, I didn't care to post the link cause I thought it was published on US-sites, too.
