i really enjoy using bittorrent and getting everything i need (movies / games, leaks, etc.) but im going off to college soon (upstate, 2,000-3,000 students) and i fear that if i attempt to use bittorrent, my room is going to be stormed by the RIAA and soforth. If i use my powerbook in the quad and download wirelessly, can I be tracked or noticed? how careful should i be?

Or you could do things the legal way and not worry.

Or do it the illegal but less catchable way of going to the school's library (my dorm had it built in), check out a DVD or CD for free, and rip it.

I'm sure that if they want to they can track you even if your logged in wirelessly (Match the MAC Address to the one that's currently on their network) But College is also one of the largest collection of pirates I've noticed :-\ Do what you will, just remember that some people do get busted.

Perhaps you should download a "shift" key so that you can create capital letters? An apostrophe key couldn't hurt either.... I bet even the RIAA would be understanding if you downloaded these things!

i know how to type. then again, this is a public forum, not some kind of a grammar / semantics contest.

oh yeah, an ellipsis consists of three periods, not four. also, you used it incorrectly...

I just figured that if you were going to post in here asking for advice as to how to steal stuff, you ought to at least sound like somebody remotely intelligent...

At the end of my sophomore year, my university decided to obstruct the more aggregious file-sharing activities by imposing a limit on extra-campus network traffic, such that each individual was only allowed X number of gigabytes of traffic per month. Anything over that, and they were charged extra (per megabyte). I can't remember what the limit was offhand, but it was actually pretty large, and obviously only targeted at the small number (probably under a dozen) of people who were creating so much file-sharing traffic that they actually slowed down the university's network. Anyway, I bring this up because the way that students eventually got around this was to create an on-campus Direct Connect hub, thus bypassing the traffic limit. I don't know for sure, but I suspect that this also made the file-sharing activities relatively invisible to RIAA/MPA sniffers.

Ah... the fall.

New beginnings, new adventures, same old people stealing something they should be paying for.

I guess it's that time of year, but I'm sorry that you had to endure my being pissy.
