So it can see around large branches it may be standing on?

That is weird looking though. That's one of those things that if it landed on you, you'd have the shivers for a few minutes!

The Platypus is a silly animal, but awesome.

The males are poisonous.

Hey, there are plenty of MacNN members who enjoy that kind of stuff, ok.
So don't be so narrow minded.

The stalked eyes are used to attract mates. Human's aren't the only species preoccupied with size.
Is it not reasonable to anticipate that our understanding of the human mind would be aided greatly by knowing the purpose for which it was designed?

Well, I'm at work so I can't dig up any of my own photo's to scan and post. But I used to work on these guys (molecular evolutionary genetics) - Ridgeia tubeworms. All of the hydrothermal vent and hydrocarbon seep vestimentiferan tube worms are weird - start out as free feeding trocophore larvae, then settle and grow into adults with no mouth, gut or anus. The adults get their metabolic energy via a symbiotic association with chemoautotrophic bacteria (ie. use hydrogen sulphide to power carbon fixation - like a plant but with chemical energy instead of light to drive the reaction).
