I am really tempted to bug the government and start a campaign for a tax rebate for those who provide proof that they have a 3 days supply of emergency supplies including 3 days of packaged food, water, medicine, batteries, radio, flash light, first aid kit. Since this would have to be done every year it would force people, the ones that would take advantage of it anyways to always keep there stuff ready, and in the mind that a disaster could one day happen. I’m sure a $150.00 (single) $500.00 (family) rebate would be enough incentive to keep a good portion of the populace prepared. Im looking for thoughts on this and perhaps partners to help in this movement.

Brian says (9:16 AM): I was looking at houses in Ottawa... I actually have a temptation in me to move
Jeff ******* says (9:19 AM): Eww, Ottawa is gross. It's infested with politicians, and presently, 1 Harper as well.

How would one provide proof? Showing receipts of those purchases doesn't prove that you aren't using them during the year.

Athens. Sorry to be uninformed, but aren't there some Canadian problems you need to worry about BEFORE you worry about U.S. problems?

Having read the papers for the last 2 weeks I can't remember a problem in Canada. Now in the States....
Or maybe your post is highlighting a significant difference between the two countries.
(and yes I am being a bastard, but then again Baden Powell said, "be prepared" which seems to be a major issue in dealing with this disaster.)

No. I am genuinely uninformed. Is Canada really that un-eventful?
If there's something Athens should bitch about, that is Canada's unemployment ratio? (unless he considers it a non-issue, of course).
It is fashionable to point and laugh at the victims of shock problems (referring to the whole U.S. and the mess in their hands), while keeping shut about one's own persistent stagnant situation.

I think if you put it on a scale, with Katrina being classed as eventful, then yes Canada is that uneventful, and I am sure they would like to keep it that way.
This tragedy is being played out around the world and has vast worldwide implications as well. These implications are why many are taking an interest in what is happening. Even where I live which has an election within the next two weeks NO dominates the number 1 news slot each night with extended coverage.

I suppose Athens is suggesting that being prepared for disaster isn't something only those living on the Gulf of Mexico need to be concerned about. Disaster can strike anywhere, even Canada. Something like half (I can't remember the actual number) of North America's top 10 natural disasters have occurred in Canada.

The government is not, and should never be, in the business of forcing people to do anything. That's what freedom is.
Besides which, survival kits have a critical weakness which cannot be overlooked: they can be rendered unusable. In the case of New Orleans, I would imagine many people had some form of stockpile not unlike the one you describe. I would also imagine that many of them were swept away or contaminated by the polluted floodwaters. Still others may have been waterproofed but rendered inaccessible by flooded basements, but I don't expect this to be a common case just because the ground in New Orleans doesn't lend itself well to building basements in the first place. Of course, there's also the fact that a survival kit is useless if it's at home and you're not.

Nice derail. I mean, Zimphire's pretty good at derailing threads, but this is a real master stroke.

The way I read the first post was not about force, but more rewarding for preparedness.
You also make it seem that a disaster kit is pointless. I would rather have a kit that could be possibly washed away than not have one at all.

I have a survival kit that's designed to be a grab and run in case I have to evacuate.
It's about 70 pounds of canned food, bottled water and various empliments.
Vianna sausages and Spam will keep for years. As will dehyreated foods.
And a kit is not something you forget about. It has to be maintained.

The only thing that stuck out in the original post is that a Canadian individual is going to bug the U.S. Gvmt.. I didn't know Athens could start a campaign to change other countries' laws. My point is that his complaints would be more productive in the country he votes in.
I mean, how can this thread remain on track if the thread title defies all logic? Canadian person campaigning for U.S. law change?

Agreed, possibly almost as surprised as those in the US were by Katrina.

Anyway, back to the subject...
As Millenium says, the critical flaw in being prepared with a "kit" of some kind is being able to keep the kit with you. Athens, I've seen kits like the one you posted a picture of, and it all fits inside that five-gallon bucket-but it floats like a rock and doesn't include drinkable water.
When the flood water is chasing you are you going to take time to fill two gallon milk jugs for EACH family member, or are you going to grab the wife and kids and RUN? I vote for running, myself. If you have those gallons of water handy, are you going to carry all of them, or the kids so you can all go faster? Got a wheel barrow to put the stuff in? How fast can you run with it? Can you run with that AND a kid or two?
I'm not knocking having a survival kit-not in the least! But even the best kit in the world can't prevent you from having problems when the weather does something you CAN'T prepare for.

Oh that is what that moron was talking about. When I was talking about bugging government I was speaking on MY government. Vancouver has been due for a major Quake for 50 years now, something in the line of 8.0 +. Fact is almost every city should be ready. Toronto was hit with a hurricane in the 50's, who would have thought.

Thats why its recommended to have a kit in your car and your home. In the case of New Orleans it would have been smart to keep the kit in the attic along with the axes some people did. It never hurts to have a kit, it will hurt to have nothing at all.

That kit actually included water, I made another post with has a link to the details for that one. The pic I posted was a 72 hour 2 person or 4 person kit. If the kit is being washed away from inside your house, chances are your house is washing away and you are swimming for your life anyways. If the house stays intact chances are the kits still going to be there. In the case of New Orleans the kits would have been best on the upper floors. For Seattle, San Francisco, Vancouver, LA kits like that would be better off in the strongest room of the house. For Tornado areas the basement. Obvious the kits placement needs to be what's best for the most likely disaster to hit a area.

You can't expect people to just forget it.
You even called ALL Americans in here pathetic, then get upset when people think you are anti-american.
A good way to STOP people accusing you of it is, quit doing it. I assure you the accusations will stop after awhile.

You can't expect people to just forget it.
You even called ALL Americans in here pathetic, then get upset when people think you are anti-american.
A good way to STOP people accusing you of it is, quit doing it. I assure you the accusations will stop after awhile.
Nope, I went to months being very careful with how I said things, such as The US Government over Americans when ranting on policies and such, didn't change a thing so I just don't care any more.

Uh yeah, to clarify I meant the people who go to H&R block each year will be too ignorant to benefit from this and if they do we are all just going to pay for these "credits" anyway.
It is a shame that the people who couldn't leave were in the situation they are in down (err up) in N.O. but the ones who could and didn't, the people who "stayed to protect their property?!?" are just plain dumb. No amount of "tax credit" can fix that.

The fact that you were fuming for days over this, shows you are too concerned with America - you simply enjoy hating it. You do hate it - seems pretty deep rooted. (PS I'm a dual citizen)

Why so concered with OUR government. Worry about your own.
"You are anti-US Government, not anti-American" right?
54% of the US people voted in this governement, so you are anti-US 54% at least.

That is quite a jump there. I have been upset for days over very trivial things, some of us are passionate like that. Telling him he enjoys hating America seems over the top.

No, it's on par with most of his Anti-America posts in the past. He enjoys it. Everyone needs a hobby I guess.

I remember 1 comment, but if it is a trend so be it, I have no real further interest in the matter.
