The word Best is subjective I know..
is best "reliable"?
is best "workmanship"?
is best "fastest"?
is best "handling"?
I don't know myself... so I say use your own standards..
but which country makes the best cars is what I'd like to know?
I have my own view, but I'll keep that to myself and see what others here are saying..
Thanks
There are many countries that I didn't list because they simply don't have a mature auto industry and/or are not in the running since they don't sell in the US: France, India, Czech, etc..
Also disregard who owns who.. that's all corporate bean counting.. Rolls is UK, and Volvo is Sweden... Not Germany, and US respectively!

Cars aren't made by "countries" anymore, - they are made by "companies".

Again.. forget that corporate ownership thing..
Acura is 95% Japan content.. MB is 87% Germany, Cadillac is 82% etc...
for all intents and purposes they are all from their respective country, with those countries cultural and engineering norms incorporated into their designs..

OK, so US cars haven't had a mention anywhere here. I do like 'em though. Maybe US cars could be filed under "coolest".

dude.. I'm sorry, you're right.. It's been a while since I've been on this forum and have been on a few US only ones.. so I got the blinders!
Sorry to all of our international members... just pick between those choice.. all that's really missing is France, and Czech / Russia and I don't think the Germans or Japanese have much to fear from them ..

Not at all. Aside from most of the parts being built in "cheap labour" countries and then shipped to other destinations to be assembled, the design and engineering is also done at a variety of different locations.
I can remeber MB a couple of years ago excpicitely communicating this in their advertizing strategy. It shifted from "Made in Germany" to "Made by MB". Other companies have now adopted similar attitudes and strategies.
It is a nice romantic notion to believe that cars are "essentially" a product of cultural idealism and "virtues" (or engineering norms, as you put it). But those days are long gone...

Germany & Japan.
Separated only by price bracket and design philosophy.
i.e. and Acura TSX (Accord Euro) or Audi A4. Every bit the BMW 3 series rival. Very much it's own take on what it should be.
Maybe a better question is which company has the 'best' design philosophy.
I'd have to give that to Honda & Audi.
But, I am in the process of buying a TSX or A4 (still can't decide), so I may be biased.

I think it's a toss up between Germany and Japan, depending on what goes into your definition of 'best'.

Where the heck do I file the Bugatti Veyron, which is owned by VW and assembled in France by Krauts and (probably) Frenchies? Either way, I don't think there's a faster "un-souped" production car out there - right or wrong?
Then again, what the heck good does a car with 1001hp, a top speed of just over 400km/h (250 mph) and a price tag north of a million Euros if it looks like a mutant VW Beetle?

If we're going to name brands... and if time weren't an issue..
Duesenberg is the king! IMHO..
with Maybach/Rolls/Bugatti below... and close to tied..
MB follows
then many, many others...
but if time (todays world) is to be regarded..
I agree.. it's a multi-national world.. but my view is the German companies still have an overall edge.. with the Swedes next and the Japanese right behind..
I value safety, performance, and build quality and all of those countries do well in this arena without having to build F350 Superduty based SUVs to achieve that goal.

I find it interesting how a few have listed UK as fastest, and not Germany..
What about Porsche 997, Merc CL65/SL65 AMG, and BMW M5??
Last I saw the UK had nothing as fast as those..

Not forgetting the official fastest car in the World:
David Vivian, one of the UK's leading magazine test drivers recently commented, "Never mind the new 911 Turbo, be unconcerned about any Ferrari, F50 included. The only road car swifter than the Ultima is the McLaren F1, and then not by much. On a performance-per-£ reckoning, of course, the GTR destroys that, too."

I have and I've even driven it (paddles and auto clutch and all)
my bro-in-law, a well off B-ball player has both. the Vanquish and a SL65... and the SL smokes it... big time. we're talking 485 ft/lbs torque vs 738!
but seriously, the Vanquish is a great car, and well made... easily able to get to 180mph.. the SL65 is a 220mph car with the governor lifted.

German cars may or may not be the best in any one of these categories, but overall I think they offer the best package.
Only downside is that they are expensive.

Sorry, I was at the track watching a Vanquish S do 210MPH (and 0-60 in 4.3secs). I doubt the SL65 smokes it, period.

go to my link I posted above and watch the CL65 (quite a bit slower than the SL65) against a DB9 (a bit slower than a Vanquish) and and the Bentley. Mind you, this is a British show with much Pro-Brit bias.. and see the results for yourself.

bah! Amateurish modification. For professional mods take a look at this:
My old "work" car (the one f*cked up in the pics). Yes, I miss it.
Though the best mod I've ever seen around here is a VW Beetle on 38". Just seems like it's impossible to find pics of it.

is best "reliable"?
Ford
is best "workmanship"?
Chevy
is best "fastest"?
Chevy
is best "handling"?
GM
I kid... I kid...
Most cars today have their specific markets. Statistically, japan has the rest of the world on average reliability... italy has speed... handling would go to Germany...
BUT, there are US cars that are reliable, well build, fast and good at handling... just like there are cars from japan that have poor reliability, workmanship...
It's a complex question.. with an even more complex answer.

Why does everyone keep quoting Germany for handling? They have Porsche and BMW (the previous model 3 is a class act), sure. But that's it (no, VWs and Audis do not handle well).
Have you guys never heard of Lotus, Noble, TVR or Caterham?
This is the best handling production car on the planet, period:

You can't compare the DB9 to the Vanquish S, the DB9 is a LOT slower.
I saw it with my eyes; 210MPH, 4.3sec 0-60. Yes, that makes it one of the fastest cars in the world. Plus, the SL65 is nice, but I'd rather be seen in a Vanquish S.
