I used to be able to watch Steve Job's keynotes on my old B/W G3 in pretty good quality. Now when I try to watch a keynote I get choppy video & audio. It has been like this now for the last 2-3 keynotes.

My computer is Powerbook G4 1.33 gh with 1.25 gb ram. MacOS 10.4.2, and the latest version of quicktime. I have high speed DSL internet connection.

Very frustrating. Do I need a dual G5 to watch streaming keynotes?

Welcome to H.264! The quality is great if you can decompress it fast enough. They can compress video so well these days that they can stream you a near HD signal over broadband, but you need a Cray on your end to watch all the frames.

The same thing happened to me. The video was out of sync with the audio. What I did was: go to Quicktime preferences in the system preferences and changed my "internet connection speed" (sorry, I'm at work now) to something a bit slower, like 300 kb/s (Cable DSL). The window is smaller but everything went back to normal.

I feel your pain. I'm hoping to get a new mac sometime this fall before my trip to Hawaii this december.

PS, I honestly don't know if this is a true solution, but the out of sync stopped after doing that.

Ok. I've tried viewing the special event at every "connection speed" preference and I couldn't see any improvement.

I just checked my dowload speed a few times. The slowest reading I got was 713.03 Kbps.

With my Powerbook having more power than the Mac Mini I shouldn't have problems viewing this steam should I?

Could it be...

Problems with airport connection?
Living overseas in Australia (although I see a UK person had no problem viewing stream).

Any ideas?

thanks,

lw

If you resize the window smaller, you should have better luck. Like I said in my post above, the problem isn't that you aren't receiving enough data, the problem is you're receiving too much data. If the window is big, your powerbook tries to decompress the high quality video but is unable to keep up.

I have similar problems on my powerbook, so I just shrank the window, and it was much better.

Just tried shrinking the window. It didn't help at all for me. Any other suggestions?

I just watched the keynote on my kids' powerbook G4 667. It was much better than watching on my G4 1.33 powerbook. Same settings in quicktime (although Quicktime is registered on my Powerbook). Both computers running same operating system & versions of quicktime. Both running off of the same wireless airport express.

Is there a way to uninstall quicktime and reinstall on my powerbook? Does anyone think it could help?

I can decompress 640x480 h.264 video with 128kbps AAC audio on my 1Ghz G4 powerbook just fine (and at 30fps as well) so I highly doubt the problem is with CPU utilization. H.264 isn't THAT bad.

You can't eat all those hamburgers, you hear me you ridiculous man?
