They got a new logo and a new website. Ya that is the #1 complaint everyone had about them.
At any rate, good luck most Mac Graphic Designers hate them more than Mircosoft.
Their new website is retched.

"Quark on Friday unveiled its new corporate logo; a change the company says signifies a shift in the way it works with its customers and the outlook they have for the future. Quark representatives said the company has been working with its customers in many different ways to get feedback and to make the Quark experience more positive"

They're hateful, obnoxious buggers to work with. I've always enjoyed their "love us or leave us" attitude.

I wonder if they coded their site with QuarkXPress. HA!

I wonder if ANYONE has ever coded a site with QuarkXPress. Seriously, why do they keep pushing the web functionality? It's freaking retarded.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

Someone needs to let quark die already. InDesign has won over the design community and it's taking years for the marketing know-nothings to figure it out.

Marketing dummy: We need this job in a quark file

Me: why?

Marketing dummy: Uh... Because.

Me: Because you like to do things the hard way?

Quark, good fscking riddance.

All "quark doesn't value its customers" aside... Quark Xpress itself sucks. I mean no transparency or good pdf/pdf support is pathetic. This is what users have been asking for for a years, instead they give us stupid output for web and other junk.

From quark's press release ...
... “Our new logo is one of the most articulate symbols of the new Quark, and I feel proud to have led the team that worked on it,” said Susan Friedman, senior vice president of strategic relations at Quark. “It’s a positive sign of change that has re-energized our staff and caught the attention of our customers and partners, who understand that Quark is dedicated to relationships built on trust and mutual goals. There’s a positive energy with our customers right now, and they’re shaping where this company is going, and how we’ll get there.”

New logo, new identity system

The new logo is a combination of pure geometric forms that suggests a stylized “Q” in a vibrant green that evokes energy and vitality.

“It’s fresh, inviting, and open,” said Glen Turpin, Quark’s director of corporate communications. “It’s radically different from our old logo. That’s why it’s the perfect symbol for the new Quark. Our company has changed dramatically. Like our new logo, once people catch a glimpse of who we are today and where we’re going, we’ll be impossible to ignore.”

The logo was designed by SicolaMartin, a division of Young & Rubicam Brands. “This really was an incredible opportunity for us, as an agency. We specialize in high-tech clients, so usually we’re doing work that speaks to IT professionals. To get to actually target designers, art directors, and creative professionals was a really fun challenge for us,” said Steve Martin, senior vice president and executive creative director at SicolaMartin. “Not only that, but to have the freedom to re-brand such a well-known company as Quark — and to create a new logo for them, as well? We were excited.” ...
Me likes. Lots.

Barring a minor miracle Quark is dead and deservedly so. The way they treated, read fleeced, their customers before Indesign was on the scene is outrageous.

I haven't touched it for years, all of my work is created in ID.

Back in the day I had an Apple //c. Quark Word Juggler recommended. Bought it for about US$60. Interface sucked.

Found AppleWorks. Loved intuitive interface, especialy in the WP module. Added some nice plug-ins from Beagle Bros.

Never looked at another Quark product to this day.

If you need to go into that much effort and detail to explain your logo, me thinks it's failed.

Anytime a company goes through that much effort to "rebrand" themselves, you know they're in the shitter, bigtime. Clearly, it was the uninviting logo that was causing them all the problems.

Usually those are the people who learned ONE way of doing things, and still do it that way. A couple of years ago I met a designer who still used Channel Operations in Photoshop, because that was the way she was taught how to do things back in the 2.5 days, and never learned masks and layers because no one taught her how to do them. I mean, duh, take a course or something...

In English as well

Plus, curd (which is the literal translation of the German word 'Quark') rhymes appropriate with another word I might find myself using to describe Quark's new logo.

Well, it kind of came across like you were under the impression that I thought Paul Rand somehow copied the Quark logo, which didn't make any sense to me given the obvious.

Actually, my Japanese is only good enough to make a good impression. This means my knowledge is "something above zero".
In a maneuver to avoid being regarded as an idiot who uses things he knows nothing about, I can only say that my nick is after the God of Earthquakes that appears in the "Encyclopedia of Things that Never Were" by Michael Page and Robert Ingpen.
I used it once when every combination of my name and common fantastic things were already taken and it just stayed.
