The University of Otago's Borrie also believes that over the past three years, after so many high-profile embarrassments, Microsoft has finally delivered more secure products and created an impressive patching infrastructure, which he believes has left Apple "a few years behind" the Redmond giant.
"I put apple a few years behind Microsoft in understanding how to manage security for the users. […] Microsoft had to fix the security because it had such a bad reputation and to its credit, the company has really turned it around, " said Borrie.
Borrie justifies his comments by pointing out that Microsoft has had a lot of practice dealing with malware attacks, which has made the company very responsive: "The early warning system and the methods Microsoft has put in place to distribute updates is really important. I don't think Apple's responsiveness is up there -- it is certainly not as good as Microsofts'."

So MS has a better track record at fixing security holes, because they have a lot, lot more of them? Twisted logic, somehow
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

I can see this guys point.

Just like African Tribesman are better at fighting off lions then New Yorkers. If a New Yorker was walking down the street and a lion jumped him, he would be screwed.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

Curse those lions... man, they are everywhere these days.

In all seriousness though, the guy is basically saying (using the analogy) "We know the Lions are coming, we just don't know when, and Apple is acting as though the Lions will never come"
I don't think I agree with his opinions. I haven't really looked into it, but I haven't seen anything that suggests OS X is less secure than Windows. Even better, if a security issue does come up, Apple's closed-shop situation makes the fix that much quicker to come out.

And I would say New Yorker's are as they all carry guns and would be quick to the draw as opposed to spear chuckers.

Apple has had some pretty nasty security holes of late. The whole Dashboard security fiasco proves that Apple still has a long way to go before they've completely gotten their heads wrapped around the concepts of proper OS security.

Yeah, that is true, but thankfully those holes have not been exploited. It's just a matter of time before there are exploits, but anyone who believes Apple's security situation is worse than M$ is on something - either on psychedelics or on the M$ payroll. Nonetheless, it's a fact that Apple could improve its communication with users. In Eug Wanker's example, not only was a fix relatively long-in-coming, Apple didn't even acknowledge the existence of the problem.

Actually the "EXPERT" only knows Windows and has no idea where Apples OS came from, or the history of UNIX, since he didn't get any classes on it during his MCSE schooling.

Lemme see... MS fixed 2,000 holes in it's Windows 2000 OS
and Aplle only plugged 27,

so MS MUST BE BETTER....

Actually, one thing I was impressed to learn about was the "Strider HoneyMonkey" research project at Microsoft. More info here. Basically, they have a series of computers set up that browse the web, mostly porn sites and other seedy areas most likely to contain exploits for browsers. They do so with machines at various patch levels to see what occurs on each one. It has helped to find several exploits in the wild that had never been publicly discussed. At that point, Microsoft got the problems fixed in the next patch round.

It seems like a great idea, and I hope Apple does similar with OS X. It's only a matter of time before hackers turn their attention to OS X. While I feel OS X is inherently more secure then Windows, it still has flaws that could be used for some nasty things.

Any OS X users here needs to realize they are not immune.

Microsoft's UK security chief hit by rouge dialler.

http://news.zdnet.co.uk/internet/0,3...9216715,00.htm

Did he forget to update his antivirus or skip a "patch tuesday"?

Windows: insecure and unsecurable.
