I bought my current mac (see sig) in August 2001), the Performa 6400 I had before that was bought in 1996 and was my first Mac. I'm guessing that I will by a new Mac next year sometime, giving this G4 a 5 year life in my hands. What type of Mac that will be, I have no idea at the moment, I fancy getting a laptop Mac, not sure what type. But anyway, how long have your macs lasted you on average before you have gone out and bought a replacement? And what did you do with the retired Mac when the new one took its place? My Performa was sold to my neighbour, and as far as I know it's still being used.

Oh and my G4 has been upgraded quite a bit since I bought it,

From:
G4 867, 60Gb HD, 128Mb RAM, 2x DVD-R "Superdrive".

To:
G4 867, 60Gb + 120Gb HD's, 1152Mb RAM, 16x DL DVD±R, Bluetooth USB module, SoundSticks speakers, 802.11g wireless PCI Card.

Look after my manor, or I will bum you, literally, to death.

The Mac I had the longest period of time was my good ol ugly 8200. I had that one approx 2 years, then went to a Lombard, which I had only for a couple months (<5), which was the shortest peroid of time.

These are my nine Macs from the past ten years (donno the time of ownership anymore...)

Performa 630/33
Powermac 8200/120
Powerbook Lombard/333
iMac Blueberry/350
iBook dual USB/500
Powerbook Titanium/500

I sell mine every 3 years or so -- or I take them to work for a while and then sell them. Actually, I'm about to sell my MDD 1.25GHz Dual G4...

My TiBook (867mhz, last generation) is 2,5 years old now but it'll have to continue serving me untill the Intel PowerMacs are available. When those are available, I'll buy the biggest and baddest PowerMac. I'm not buying a PowerPC based Mac anymore. And I don't have the money for a new one at the moment anyway.

I am using a 700MHz iMac i bought about 3 years ago or so. I wanted to upgrade, but since this is still plugging along, I'll wait to see what the intel machines look like.

Last one was the G3 350 B/W tower - when they first came out;
still have it sitting here purring. Got a PB G4, 1.5 ghz last Summer.
I'm set for a while. External Maxtor, for Backups. Canon 20D, Sony HD40,
couple of Epson printers. What more could a girl want?
.....well, ya, more lenses of course.....and I could do with more Ram.

i had my ibook g3 800 for about 9 months and then i got an offer from someone; which i couldn't refuse. i did not intend on selling it so early.
i bought a 12" powerbook which i kept for about 4 months, until i found a refurb 15" for $100 more than i paid for the 12". i sold the 12"
this was in my last year.

i still have the 15" and in may this year i bought a 17" iMac.

i see myself having the powerbook for another year or so, and the imac for about 2 more years.

In college I went through 3 Macs in 3 years. This Powerbook has lasted me a year and a half, and I hope it lasts me a year and a half more. If I can swing the funds I wouldn't mind upgrading to a new laptop once every three years.

My parents on the other hand buy a new Mac every 4 to five years. You know, when it stops working and can't run any new software.

Yours died in March?

I got mine in Sept '01 and am typing on it right now - although it's quite different to when it was new. Originally 10GB 128MB DVD, now has
80GB
640MB
Bluetooth
Airport
OS 10.4

Plenty fast enough for me with 10.4 and the RAM. Should keep me going well into 2006 or even beyond if nothing breaks!

Tangerine iMac/233Mhz=5 years when heat-sync went out, no monitor.
Tibook/500Mhz= still chugging away with two broken hinges. I opened it one day.
iPod/10gig= 2 years. Can't get computer to recognize it. Tried multiple ways of resolving issue, remains dead. Oh wait, this isn't a shoddy craftsmanship thread.

Gluttoned for punishment and getting my wife the 1.67 Ghz PowerBook. Jonesin' to recieve it, check @ MacConnection's Prepaid Dept waiting on ship notification.

I guess I average 3 years, depending on the model, what I want to do, and my budget.
My Quadra lasted 2 years, Power Tower 3 years, G4 Sawtooth 5 years and counting.

I had my 7200 for 3 years, my iMac for 2 years (needed a bigger screen for graphics work), and my current 733 QS is 4 years old.

Now with Panther my machine runs better than when I bought it, in fact, its been going up in value for me with every new OS release. If I had to guess I'll probably still be using this machine when its 6 years old. Just thinking about a 6 year old PC makes me wince.

my macs used to last me about 6 months because i would always upgrade so i could have the latest and greatest mac out there. but now i am happy with waiting until my mac is so slow i can't handle it anymore. right now my iBook G4 800mhz is fine - but i will be getting the first intel based iBook
