This is my theory. There are 3 great Antivirus software out there, Trend Micro, Norton and McAffee. However, how many of you believe this is actually a scandal? What I mean is, a large deal in which they pay people to make viruses and get back 100 times the profit through customer purchases everyday? I'm not attacking all these companies and 'saying' that is what they're doing. But, it has crossed my mind. Is there anyone else out there who shares similar views? Have heard rumors? Seems logical enough to me.

Yes.

Every few months, you hear from some A/V company about a new virus that's discovered. It tends to be false (in the Mac case) but the FUD generates a few sales, I reckon.

I'd do almost anything to get rid of Norton AV from my PC. I absolutely hate Norton software with a passion. McAfee is almost as bad.

What's this Trend Micro? I've not heard of them/it o_O

Most viruses are "constructed" by script kiddies who use "virus tool kits" to paste together code they can never hope to understand. The "big three" are most certainly NOT behind the viruses-they'd at least make sure that new viruses were better made than the current crop.

Every now and then somebody who's been diligently digging into the innards of Windows finds something that he can exploit and does so. These are the ones that get big press.

As for Mac virus announcements, all of 'em I've seen were "unless you've loaded update such and such, you could be susceptible to..." or "users of OS 8.4 and earlier..." I haven't seen any "Oh my god the world is going to end because of this Mac virus" announcements at all. And after having to deal with viruses for so long on business and personal PCs, it's refreshing. Unfortunately I'm cynical enough to believe it won't last...

Sophos is the best, but it is for mutli-user/big companies not single users. I believe the minimum license is 10 users for small business. Mostly used in Education (like me) and Government. It is pretty damn good.

ClamAV is pretty nice too, unobtrusive.

Yes, the same thing has cross my mind many times also. A definite flow of income.

I like Norton.

Why pay for Norton when you can download and install a well-maintained open source equivilent installed on many email servers?

So how exactly would that be any different to the PC version?

I acually don't mind Norton on the PC. I still use 2003 professional and I have never gotten a virus. I have found its active protection to be pretty good. When I was on the campus network last year, people using Mcafee (suplied by the school) or AVG got viruses all the time. I would install Norton for them and they never had problems after that.

groovy - for a minute there i was picturing god with a cut and paste kit putting together new viruses... a little bird flu, a touch of the common cold, incubate for a few weeks in a remote chinese village and viola - instant pandemic!
