CNN article

It things like these that makes me wonder about the News Media. I never knew this. You mean LOUD noises can harm my hearing? Holy Cow, I just don't believe it. Next thing their going to tell me smoking is bad for my lungs and looking into the sun for long periods of time can harm my eyes. My world is just blown. I guess unprotected sex with a HIV infected drug addict whore is dangerous too.

(Note the dripping sarcasm)

The sad truth is many people don't know this little fact.
"This is fun, right?"

This is perhaps an issue because EU law means that iPods have a lower limit for the headphone output than US law.

Meaning that European Law recognised that hearing damage could be caused by overly-loud headphones whereas US law did not.

Regardless, i hacked my UK iPod so that it didn't have a limit. Its still not loud enough if i'm walking along a busy road or sitting on the bus. I should really invest in some proper headphones.

Or maybe you're just going deaf.

I never have the volume on my iPod up that high, since the music's just there to keep me amused. I friggin' hate it when I'm on the streetcar and I can hear someone else's music over my own.

Eh, they'll be deaf when they're 40, and I'll be fine. Screw 'em if they wanna be stupid.

You must be deaf
Ask yourself if it's honestly that important to hear every nuance of your music, vs. keeping your hearing as you age.

This is the general argument AGAINST purchasing very expensive car stereo equipment. Obviously the low quality stuff isn't great, but at some point, it simply doesn't matter how much higher the equipment is... YOU ARE IN A CAR!

Don't Lose The Music says it all. It is a serious problem for a lot of people, and it's been there for a long time.

Even though this is up there with "don't eat the toner" and "never pour creme soda in a disk drive", I wonder when Apple will be hit with a class action suit over this and have to put warning labels on iPods...

There's bigger volume-related hearing issues out there than the max volume of an iPod - I had "dolby ear" for 5 days after hearing Black Sabbath at Ozzfest last week. So did about 10,000 other people.

No one was selling earplugs - I bet they could have made a good chunk of change.

It's nothing to do with 'every nuance'. If I'm walking by a street with a lot of traffic, I have to have the volume set to about 90% before I can even hear the music. Even if I turn it up to 100%, I still can't make out any detail in the music. But I don't keep it at 100%, 'cause that's just painful in my ears. On average, I think I keep it at about 80-85%, except if I'm indoors and it's quiet, in which case I can manage with 50-60%. Any kind of external noise, and I have to turn it up 20% or so.

I think I need better headphones.

if its too loud, your too old!!! j/k

I've lost about 30% of my hearing in my left ear and 20% in my right. being a drummer my whole life i feel it could be much worse, but should be much better. I use hearing protection as much as possible now.

Hmm, do they limit the volume of ipods in Canada? I can have mine at full blast and sometimes it still doesn't seem loud enough.

Maybe my hearing's already shot.

Due to my DJing days, I've lost some of my hearing on my left ear. It's not too bad, so I say keep blasting those iPod earphones

anyone out there use noise cancelling phones? decent ones cost a bundle and i've always wondered whether they're worth it...

i currently use a pair of full ear sennheisers with no noise cancelling but decent sealing around the cups, which keeps out a fair bit of external noise. buds are just terrible for that (and sound like $#!+ imho).
