I've always thought of Porsche as being the 911. However, they make a baffling array of cars that look almost, but not precisely, the same - Boxters, Caymans, Carreras. And of course the Cayenne, (but the less said about that the better). Can anyone explain to me where these all fit in? Cheers

The 911 (Carrera) is for people who want a Porsche.
The Boxster is for people who want a Porsche but can't afford it.
The Cayenne is for people who want a 4x4 and a Porsche but can't afford both.
The Cayman is for people who want a Porsche and have no discernible taste.
The Carrera GT is for people who already own a Porsche (or two).
There ya go.

I have to disagree with that one, the Cayman is awesome. 300HP in a lightweight coupe with luggage space!

And you forgot the upcoming Panamera, for the family who wants a Porsche but doesn't want a gas guzzling SUV.

In reality, they're all great cars, and I'd love to have any of them. (perhaps not a Boxster though. Boxster S maybe..)
Sign me up for a GT2/GT3 or GT.

The fact that you've used the words "gas guzzling" about SUVs in a thread about Porsches has led me to disregard your entire post. You do know that all of the TDi SUVs on UK roads are guzzling less than any Porsche save the 924, right?
Bloody townies!

I was talking specifically about the Cayenne, which is not a TDi and is a gas guzzler.

The Cayman is the roadster version of the Boxter. Only marketing people know why Cayman costs more than the Boxter (Porsche deliberately put in more horsepower).
The 911 is the Carrera. There are several different versions of that, Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Turbo. You can get it as Cabrio (convertible), Targa (mixture of a convertible and a regular roadster) and the plain-vanilla roadster.
In addition to that, there are tuned versions, GT2 and GT3 which don't have a turbo (not to be confused with the GT which is an entirely different animal).

For reference: By "roadster" I guess Oreo is talking about the coupe versions. Not to be confused with Porsche-speak, where a "roadster" is a two-seat convertible (i.e. the Boxster is "roadster" in Porsche-speak).

*cough* the GT2 is turbocharged - it's essentially a 911 Turbo without the AWD.
The Carrera issue (to clear up any confusion):
"Carrera" is a model designator (which doesn't mean much other than "standard, no-turbo") within the 911 line. Except the Carrera GT, which isn't a 911 but a whole other model.

The GT2 is THE most powerful and race-ready Porsche there is. Its a bi-turbo powerplant in fact.

Yes, it's the most powerful (IIRC, although the Turbo S gets close).
I don't think it's the most "race-ready" though - it's as luxurious as the Turbo inside (all that extra weight with the air-con, electric everything, etc.). I'd guess that the most "race-ready" model available to the public was the GT3 RS (not sure you could get that in the US).

Quoth Clarkson: the Boxster is the car that lets people know that you can't afford a 911.

My bad, but the GT3 is the one that doesn't have a turbo, right?
But AFAIK the GT2 and GT3 are a few notches more sporty than the usual Turbo.

Here's your basic model - it's expensive.
Here's your top-the-line model -- it's VERY expensive.

The 911 is for people who don't know too much about cars and buy what everybody else buys.
The Boxster is for the wife or the hairdresser, I must admit that the latest generation is very good. The Bostster isn't the "Porsche for people who can't afford a 911" anymore, it's a whole different beast now.
The Cayenne: you deserve to die if you buy that.
The Cayman: now this is THE Porsche to buy today. It's soooo good, it costs way less than a 911 and is faster around the Ring than a 911 Carerra 4. CAR magazine had a great article about it some time ago, they said that there was no reason whatsoever to choose a 911 above this one.
The Carerra GT, well it's cool but I wouldn't buy it if I had the money.
And people that buy a Porsche with Tiptronic belong in the Cayenne category.

Yep, you're right there - it's just a tuned, slightly larger version of the regular engine. They still do 193 mph (ish).

The GT3 is a lot more sporty than the Turbo, having a somewhat stripped interior, no centre console (as standard), non-reclinable lightweight bucket seats, etc..
The GT2 is only more sporty than the Turbo due to the increase in power and a 10mm drop in the suspension - it's still got all the luxuries. It's sort of the "comfort option" for nutters (because they're a bit of a wild drive, by all accounts) - not really sporty, just seriously fast. I once read that the GT2 does 0-100-0 faster than the Turbo does 0-100. No idea if this is true or not, but if so:

The Boxster's great for people who don't live in areas with no speed limit. You can break any speed limit in California in 2nd gear. So what's the point of having a 911? Well, other than to say "I'm rich."

The options on the Boxster can make it a lot more expensive than a 911. Leather trim for the fuse box? Hehe.

What's the point in having a 2004 Cobra with 600 HP? or a 2001 Z28 with nitrous and 500 HP? or a 911 Turbo? or a Lamborghini Gallardo? or even a Lotus Elise with 200HP and 2000lb curb weight???
for fun! (legal or illegal, it's all fun)
but true.. gimme a new Boxster and I would surely drive it.

You can get more shopping in the back of a 911 than you can a Boxster.

No, you can get the same amount of shopping in the front of a Boxster as you can in a 911 (so no gain there).
However, if you fold the rear seats down on a 911 you'll find there's a nice shelf which will take a lot of stuff. The Boxster obviously hasn't got this space as it's not got rear seats to fold down.

You're mistaking the GT3 with GT2 - the GT3 is the "comfort" version and the GT2 is the "race-ready", most powerful Porsche (except the Carrera GT)!

The point is: if you're gonna do something illegal at a stoplight - in your high dollar supercar, you want not to be next to such a car as a modded Cobra. I'm a big fan, and no, you won't be talking me out of it.

Thats what I said earlier. The GT2 is a 460+ HP BEAST, it shares the ceramic disc brakes from the Carrera GT.

No. The GT2 is the comfort version, the GT3 the stripped version.
For example: GT2 = fully electric seats. GT3 = non-adjustable lightweight race buckets.
Go look it up if you don't believe me.
BTW... "race ready" doesn't mean most powerful - the GT2 is certainly the most powerful - it means "least amount of work before you take it into competition". Don't be fooled by the extra power of the GT2 - the GT3 is faster around a circuit because it handles better, it's more progressive. The GT2 tends to put you through the hedge when it come on boost.

He's right. The GT3 is a street version of a race car. Its engine is naturally aspirated and very wiry, but makes less power than the GT2, which is turbocharged. I have seen plenty of GT3's at the race track:
