Clerk charged with urinating in soda
The Associated Press
Last Updated: September 15, 2005, 06:42:09 PM PDT
DELTONA, Fla. (AP) - A convenience store clerk was charged Thursday with felony tampering after allegedly urinating in a bottle of soda that was later drunk by a customer who became violently sick.
Anthony Mesa, 21, was being held by Volusia County officials on $1,500 bond for the first-degree felony charge of tampering with a consumer product, sheriff's officials said.
Deputies also filed a criminal complaint against a second clerk who worked at the Pix Convenience Store in Deltona. Detectives believe 20-year-old William Bonilla coaxed Mesa into the prank last week.
The State Attorney's Office will decide whether any criminal charges will be filed against Bonilla.
Neither Mesa nor Bonilla had telephone listings and couldn't be reached for comment. It was unknown if Mesa had retained an attorney.
The victim, a foreman with a Daytona Beach construction company, became suspicious of the drink after he chugged it and vomited three or four times. The customer, referred to as "LT" in the arrest affidavit, was being tested for diseases such as Hepatitis C and gonorrhea, according to his attorney.
Here is the question that should be asked: What kind of idiot does not check a bottle of soda for an intact seal?

And another question which needs to be asked: What kind of society do we live in where we have to check that the seal is intact?
Give the dweeb 40 years in the slammer to set an example to other clerks thinking they might do the same thing.

Violently sick? It must of been after he found out what he just drank. Urine is one of the most sanitary things one could drink.
(This is just based on information I've heard, not through first-hand experience!!)

I think the main problem is that he was drinking soda. If he'd have gotten water, this wouldn't have been an issue.

Ordinarily true, but it can also be loaded with toxins (lead, arsenic - if you're exposed to these, will be passed in your urine), metabolized drug byproducts, liver waste byproducts resulting from disease, and so forth. So depending on the, err, donor's? state of health, life style, and habitat (eg. how clean is the water they drink at home), it can be a real nasty chemical stew. Urea itself is toxic by nature, although you need pretty high doses to react violently to it.

Don't some people in Japan drink their own peepee for health benefits? Reclaim lost vitamins... or something?
With all the coffee I drink I'd get a caffein buzz all over again. Won't taste much different either.

Your own urine is sterile. Other people's is not. Had the store clerk drank the bottle nothing would have happenned. Had the bottle been filled with the customers urine, nothing would have happenned.
