I was prepared for a jump in the price of gas in anticipation of a disruption of production facilities, and here in SA I've been pleasantly surprised that the jump has been fairly small. But that price in Quebec is about $6.50/gallon Canadian-that's outrageous! Here it's going for about $2.60-$2.80/gal-the equivalent of about 80-90¢ Canadian per liter.
I can almost understand gas stations here in San Antonio running out-the one I use regularly did yesterday afternoon, but got refilled and simply had to deal with long lines of customers after that. With a lot of people evacuating here from the coast, it makes sense that they're going to be pretty much out of gas. But why should the grocery store next to that station be out of so many things? I HATE skim milk, and we drink 2% instead, but skim was all that was left. They were almost out of bread, and were completely out of toilet paper. I don't know about anyone else, but I am rather aware that San Antonio is almost 300 miles INLAND and unlikely to suffer longlasting effects from ANY hurricane. And does it take ten rolls of TP to put up a few relatives for a few days? That's ridiculous.
Oh, and our relatives from Katy are sticking it out (they're about 80 miles inland) for two reasons: yesterday it was impossible to even get TO I 10 to head west, and because my brother-in-law's parents, sister and her husband decided LATE Thursday to evacuate to Katy from Port Arthur. I bet they don't get all the way to the Astrodome, let alone Katy...
