Stupid Canadians...

Rita fuels surge in gas prices

A wave of panic buying drained gas stations across Eastern Canada yesterday as motorists scrambled to fill up their tanks, driven by the fear of another hurricane-induced price spike.

One major wholesaler, Bradshaw Fuels, said 30 of the 120 retail sites it supplies in Southwestern Ontario ran out of gas by yesterday afternoon. The remaining 90 are in danger of doing so today, the company said.

Wholesale commodity prices soared that day, and pump prices soon followed, with the average cost in Canada jumping to $1.26 a litre that week, and some cities seeing gasoline selling for more than $1.49 a litre.

Prices posted yesterday easily eclipsed those records. Two stations in Stratford posted a price of $2.24 a litre.
[Eug's note: Prices were around $1 in Ontario just the day before.]

In suburban Montreal, drivers were paying as much as $1.95.

In the Halifax area, long lineups formed at several gas stations as rumours of $2-per-litre gasoline swept the city.

Local resident Nathalie Racine fills her car as the price for regular gas is at 167.4 cents a litre Thursday in Quebec City. The price went down to 114.4 cents a litre for regular gas while she was filling up.

I was prepared for a jump in the price of gas in anticipation of a disruption of production facilities, and here in SA I've been pleasantly surprised that the jump has been fairly small. But that price in Quebec is about $6.50/gallon Canadian-that's outrageous! Here it's going for about $2.60-$2.80/gal-the equivalent of about 80-90¢ Canadian per liter.

I can almost understand gas stations here in San Antonio running out-the one I use regularly did yesterday afternoon, but got refilled and simply had to deal with long lines of customers after that. With a lot of people evacuating here from the coast, it makes sense that they're going to be pretty much out of gas. But why should the grocery store next to that station be out of so many things? I HATE skim milk, and we drink 2% instead, but skim was all that was left. They were almost out of bread, and were completely out of toilet paper. I don't know about anyone else, but I am rather aware that San Antonio is almost 300 miles INLAND and unlikely to suffer longlasting effects from ANY hurricane. And does it take ten rolls of TP to put up a few relatives for a few days? That's ridiculous.

Oh, and our relatives from Katy are sticking it out (they're about 80 miles inland) for two reasons: yesterday it was impossible to even get TO I 10 to head west, and because my brother-in-law's parents, sister and her husband decided LATE Thursday to evacuate to Katy from Port Arthur. I bet they don't get all the way to the Astrodome, let alone Katy...
