Each Manintel will come with a tiny, ninja leprechaun which will seek out and destroy non-Apple branded machines running OS X. Now, I don't know about where you come from, but around here tiny, ninja leprechauns are very, very cool.

I hear that Apple is trying to get a Mac OS X version running on Intel chips. Maybe finally, they don't ship them with Windows.

Just download a copy of the intel dev build, and one will be at your door momentarily.

So ask a question that doesn't lead to them.

There is no big deal. Apple switched architectures because IBM wasn't satisfying them with whatever. Rosetta (PPC code translator layer) will run most PPC apps fine with a small speed hit until those apps are ported to universal binaries. The only impact is that Altivec and G5 specific apps won't run correctly or at all under rosetta. And PPC specific plugins will need to be recompiled for intel (like ppc itunes plugins, safari plugins, screensavers, prefpanes etc.) I'm sure it will be a fairly smooth transistion.

It's a big deal because Steve says it will allow Apple to build better products for us all. That's about it...you'll get a better Mac. (faster, longer battery life, etc.)

The bigg deal is speed. OS x on an intel chip will be crazy. The G5 is great and all but its not as revolutionary as they made it. And thats obvious otherwise apple wouldnt be switching to an intel based chipset. I think in the long run macs will become more affordable and have a better portable solution for power users.

Yes the speed increase is quite apparent. My almost 4 year old HP 2.53 Ghz P4 appears to run faster than even the newest G5's. (I'm not saying in terms of filters or whatnot, just the overall speediness of applications and the GUI) Now imagine how fast OS X will fly on a dual core 3 Ghz.

You buy an Apple for the experience. From the awesome looking and functional operating system to the incredible industrial design of the machines themselves.

Switching from an IBM to an Intel CPU isn't going to change that. So in short, there's not big deal at all.

Well, there could be if Intel forces Apple to start puting Intel stickers all over the f*cking place. Apple would go out of business for real.
