I am calling for you guys who had long hair and and were litening to so-called rock (more like hard rock at the time).

A song, by a very popular band of the 70s. Can't remember the name.

There is the world "lady" in the title.

For the life of me, I can't remember what it is! I have it on a tape under a mountain of boxes about 15 hours by car from where I am...

Can anyone help me?

The album cover was in black and white if memory serves me well. There was a woman on it...

I want... no I need that song!

Thanks!

Something like "lady of the night".

In the chorus.

Nope.

And it is not "lady of the night" by Donna Summers either.

I know the chorus ends with "lady of the night".

I thought at first it was Scorpions, or Black Sabbath (?) but I can't find the song by ear from what I heard.

I am desperate...

It goes like this:

Heavy fuzzy guitar: taadudum ta-da taadudum tada ta-a-a-a taadudum tada taadudum (etc.)

Hope this helps...

but that is not the one I am looking for.

Oh Man! For crying out loud I hate not being able to recall the name of that song!

They were very popular.

The thing is that song was sonically unconventional. Like hard rock for the time; not the liquid/organic Led Zeppelin sound.

That song I am looking for was not popular. But it had that directness...

I can't tell how many people were involved. The title may not have been "Lady of the night". Could have been Spanish Woman though.

How about Black Sabbath's Dirty Woman from the album Technical Ecstasy (1976)?

Partial lyrics:
The neon lights are shining on me again
I walk the lonely streets in search of a friend
I need a lady to help me to get through the night

That is not it.

Not that singer for sure. The singer had a voice closer to Ian Gillan's Deep Purple.

The song is also much faster, although it is not speed metal.

I woke up this morning and recalled that the song starts with the word "Woman". It's heavy, with distorted bass guitars, barely any drums (or rather discrete). There is a soloist as well

Woman from Tokyo by Deep Purple?

Fly into the rising sun,
Faces, smiling everyone
Yeah, she is a whole new tradition
I feel it in my heart

My woman from tokyo
She makes me see
My woman from tokyo
She's so good to me

Talk about her like a queen
Dancing in a eastern dream
Yeah, she makes me feel like a river
That carries me away

My woman from tokyo
She makes me see
My woman from tokyo
She's so good to me

But i'm at home and i just don't belong ...

So far away from the garden we love
She is what moves in the soul of a dove
Soon i shall see just how black was my night
When we're alone in her city of light

Rising from the neon gloom
Shining like a crazy moon
Yeah, she turns me on like a fire
I get high

My woman from tokyo
She makes me see
My woman from tokyo
She's so good to me

No. There are no keyboards used in that song. It is a pretty clean sound and no organ. It is a very good recording.

OK. Let's recapitulate.

Voice like Ian Gillan, melodic, not too guttural, no Ozzy Osbourne.
Strong bass guitar, distorted.
Strong melodic solo
70's
Starts with "Woman" after the musical intro
Kinda refers to ladies of the night (especially at the end of a chorus
Song is engaging, like energetic, not a ballad at all.

Man. So few cues and yet, I have the whole song in my head or pretty close, and I cannot decipher most of the lyrics...

Got to go to work now...

Thanks all for your help so far. If I find it, I promise to post about it!

Is it Van Halen's "Women In Love" ?

My heart, you're breakin' my heart
Girl, you better start thinkin' somethin' real
Seems like lovin' you is just a crazy dream
But do as you feel
All these crazy women
One more crazy night
But one night's all we're given
So baby (Ahh) leave me alone, or baby, stay the night
(Oh, women in love)
Oh baby, make up your mind (Make up your mind)
I know you're in love (Oh, women in love)
So baby, make up your mind (Women in love)
Scream, go on an' scream
That your love is all you're knowin'
But honey, if you're needin' a woman just as bad as me
Ya ought'ta be goin'
All these crazy women
Ah just one more crazy night
But one night's all we're given
So honey (Ahh) leave me alone, or I may be stayin' the night
(Guitar Solo)
All these crazy women
Ah just one more crazy night
But one night's all we're given
So honey (Ahh) leave me alone, or lady, you're stayin' the night
(Oh, women in love)
Mmm baby, make up your mind (Make up your mind)
And I know you're in love (Oh, women in love)
Mmm babe I know you're in love (Women in love)
I know, I know
Ooh yeah! This woman in love. In love. In love, ooh yeah!
Ah ah ah!
Ah ah ah!
Ooh yeah, wow!
Ooh yeah, oh yeah-eah
Aaahhh!

OK. The sound is close, but the signer is not the same. Also, this is Rock'n'roll. The song I am referring to is clearly metal type and the recording is very clear from what I remember.

well that's my 2 cents. hopefully it'll help. good luck.

We're not talking "Lady Evil" by Sabbath off "Heaven and Hell" with Ronnie singing, are we?

Black and white album cover (well, nearly) with a sort of a woman on it.
Distorted bass.

There’s a place just south of witches’ valley
Where they say the wind won’t blow
And they only speak in whispers of a name
There’s a lady they say who feeds the darkness
It eats right from her hand
With a crying shout she’ll search you out
And freeze you where you stand

Lady evil, evil
She’s a magical, mystical woman
Lady evil, evil in my mind
She’s queen of the night
All right!

Sounds like Dio to me.

Not at all.

See, the sound of Dio is too young. Way too young.

It is a band from before 1985. I checked several recording true the iTunes store and listened to a few songs to get a good idea of their singers and I can't find it.

This is very depressing.

If I only could give you a piece of my brain, 'coz I have like the first 2 minutes very clear in my head, except for the lyrics.

Dang.

That Sabbath song with Dio singing was released in 1980 - I thought you may have been off a couple of years, that's all.

Doofy, Kevin, I think the Dio trail is good; the voice seems much more accurate to my memories, especially with the Black Sabbath sound.

I feel we're on the right track somehow. The singer's voice seems vey similar to Dio's.

So how about early David Coverdale / Whitesnake material? There's a song called 'Lady' (something?) that has a chorus like:

"Lady you're my lady
You're my woman
Got the love I need
You are my woman
"

No.

Both White Snake and Bad company's singers have not the voice I am looking for.

As I said earlier, closer to Ian Gillan of Deep Purple. Yet, reminiscent of DIO during the Black Sabbath period.

The woman on black and white cover is really throwing me. So I'll ignore it.

"Lady Double Dealer" off Deep Purple's Stormbringer?
(I've not heard this - not a big Purple fan - so this is only here to prevent me saying "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You" by The Tap)

(edit: oops, not Coverdale then)

Tom Petty does not have the voice of the singer of the song I am looking for at all. Not even the same style of music.

Guitars are heavy, but the sound is so clean, it's not as if the whole thing is bathing in distortion. It is not Ian Gillan, but reminds me of him a lot.

The first word said in that song is "Woman". Maybe I'll try to play it on some keyboard or some software... and post a link here.

Here is a link to my .mac homepage.

You will find 2 files: Guiter intro and finale and Bass accompaniement.

The Guitar intro and finale melody are pretty much the same in the original song. It does start with the intro, then is followed by the bass (second file). What I have not included is the guitar solo after the bass line starts, which is followed by the singer starting his song with the lyric "Woman...". The song is not very long, IIRC, maybe 3 to 4 minutes. The guitar melody of the intro closes the song with a fading out finale, slower as well.

Hope this helps!

PS: I used microSynth and WireTapPro to create these samples.

That intro is "Sails of Charon" by the Scorpions, taken off the 1978 album "Taken by Force". Interestingly, the 1975 album "In Trance" (second album before "Taken by Force"), does have a black and white photo of a woman on it.

THE SAIL OF CHARON

Music: Ulrich Roth
Lyrics: Ulrich Roth

Dark night! There is no light
in the realm of the black magic man
Souls flight into the cold blight
of the destroyers magic land
Poor man! Those spirits are stronger
there the one's who will reign
your strugglings are in vain
Blind man! You're sucking your own blood
soon black magic's dying
you'd better start crying
Burn out! Your evil desire
the dark Angels Kingdom
is built out of mine.
Keep on! For the Kingdom of light
there is no darkness
and there is no night.
Hmmm... Why did I hear woman? I've been single for too long. Waaaay too long.....

Thank you everyone, and again, especially Doofy.

I think it's the "poor man whose spirits are stronger" bit - the pronunciation does sound like "woman" (at least on the Malmsteen cover of it I'm listening to right now).

Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
That's where there's thunder... and the wind shouts back.

Thank goodness I remembered I played music a few decades ago!

I believe you're right.

That was fun.

We should have games like that on this forum.
