The creators of MacNN are proud to announce the launch of Left Lane News, a new Web site for the automotive enthusiast. While not a part of the MacNN network, Left Lane News will try to deliver the best in automotive industry news coverage, bringing a new level of professionalism not seen in other automotive "weblogs." Topics will include future vehicles, car reviews, political issues, investor news, auto safety, recalls, consumer concerns, and more. Reader feedback and discussion will be encouraged via a comment system. Much like MacNN, Left Lane News will be updated several times a day as required.
------
We know a lot of you are car guys. Enjoy!

Cool. I was looking for a MacNN equivalent for the car industry the other day but couldn't find anything that gave updates as regularly. As long as this isn't too Americanised then I'll be visiting regularly - and considering the first two articles are about the S Class and Caymen it seems that there is a definite awareness of European cars
Very nice Mac-like design too. Is this site why the MacNN redesign has been held up for so long?

It looks like the site also covers news from european carmakers. And then I guess they would also cover asian carmakers too...
This is what I hope, if it's just going to be about the latest SUV or Hummer*, then I won't be a page I'm going to visit...

Of course it will. The owners of MacNN don't care about the Database Errors on this site. What makes you think they'll care about Database Errors on their other site as well?

Whew. It just wouldn't have that homey MacNN feel if I could post without seeing the Database Error on my first try.

Such a misconception some of you have about coverage. Any of the publications/websites I visit cover all makes/models. You do know that in America, we get Japanese and European cars, eh?
Top Gear/5th Gear? Love it, plays locally weekly, with reruns. Two diff. channels as well.
Automobile, Car and Driver, Road and Track. These rags(also tv shows) cover all makes and models. Since forever.
Do you think we get 'American Car Magazine'? Yea, and it's all about the latest low-grade plastics too.
(just leave me to my 'Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords' tyvm
Good luck with the site, bookmarked!

Well when we see American cars we figure the last time you must have seen a European car was about 1995

It's going to need a forum just so Ca$h can get banned from it. That would be perfect.

Gosh, could the logo be any more obviously "inspired" by the Dashboard icon?!?

Seconded. The first thing that I did recognize. Otherwise, the site design is nice. A bit techie, however.

Hmm
I think the dashboard is more of a rippoff of a speedometer on a real dashboard...

Yes, but it's the stylization that's a knock-off. Same colors, same needle style, near-identical lens glare, etc. Some elements (like the needle axle) are different, but share much in common.
Besides, I've never seen a speedometer in a production car that looks too much like that -- speedometers these days don't have individual lenses and a chromed bezel (except in a mini maybe?).

None of the Google Image results look as much like the Dashboard one as LLN's does.

Yes, Dashboard's is modeled after a car odometer, and LLN's is modeled after Dashboard's with the Apple-specific iconography replaced with the original numbers.

D'oh! Someone noticed - ยง$&% !!
Really guys, what do you think the accompanying thought process (if any, you never know after all) regarding the logo symbol was?
tab "Yes! Let's make a carbon copy of the dashboard icon ...
tab then post a notice about the site in (one of) the largest Mac forum(s) ...
tab and keep our fingers crossed that no one notices!"
or maybe ...
tab "I am terribly sorry ...
tab but there is no other way of drawing a tachometer in Illustrator!"
Then again, maybe the motivation was an entirely different one? Come on, the observation was good (albeit rather obvious). Let's see if the conclusion's going to be just as accurate.
As far as what tachs in different cars do (or don't) look like - yes the tach in my car (BMW Z3 Coupe) looks exactly like the one in the logo symbol, so does the one in my neighbor's Z4, so does the one in my Dad's old car (BMW 530d station wagon), the one in his new car (Audi A4 Avant 3.0tdi) as well as the one in my Mom's new car (VW Polo 1.4). While in each car the tach is indeed embedded inside an instrument cluster (various combinations of speedometer, tach, bord computer, gauges, etc.), they all have exactly that style element in common - a chrome or (brushed) aluminum ring around a black dial with a red needle and white/red nunbers on the dial. The one's in the BMWs even have the little chrome/aluminum knobbie thing on which the needle's mounted. And none of them has a single lens, of course
