I currently work in sales for a wireless company, I am finishing up my 3rd year with the company. I started in October of '02. Each year my performance has improved, yet each year my pay has decreased. I am required to do more for less money each year. I am very fed up and have been searching for a new job. I am a college grad who has been unsuccessful in finding a decent job.

I have been going through an interview process with another company going on 4 weeks now for another sales job. I've had 2 interviews both went well IMO but I need to have a 3rd interview with one more person who is always busy, he was at a trade show in Paris last week and before that he was in Phoenix at another trade show. He was due to return Friday, and he was supposed to call me to set up one last interview. I left him a message and an email yesterday and I've yet to hear from him. I do not know where to go from here, I am tired of reading through classified ad after classified ad, and sick of monster.com and careerbuilder, it seems as most jobs on there are B.S. I need a better job now, it is bringing down my mood and not to mention my bank account.

What does one need to do to find a decent job? I am successul at my current job, but the pay is not enough and the advancement opportunities aren't there. Plus I am bored with it. I need a challenge and more money I am about to have to survive on ramen noodles in order to pay my mortgage and car payment.

Sorry for the long post, but man i'm in a shi**y mood.

Why don't you consider working for yourself? It takes a lot of perseverance but in then end the reward is good!

Your story is exaclty what I hate about coporate America.... Why 3 interviews? I am currently sending my resume to a company to "crit" it. They emailed me back and wanted 600.00 for a resume and was like I'm real "blunt". You know what? I like my resume just the way it is, lol!

the reason I had 3 interview is because the first interview was basically a mistake I applied for sales but when I showed up for the interview they were interviewing for tech support and had my resume by mistake. They said they'd interview me and if they like me they'll have sales call me, so the sales guy I need to speak with was out of town so the COO of the company said he will talk to me in the meantime but I still need to speak with the sales guy who is at the trade show. I am sick and tired of this B.S.

Go the bank with an idea. Raise some money from friends, relatives, involve someone with capital try to convince them with your "good idea". Do sound research on it and come up with a business proposal. But most of all start thinking and believing!

Unless you are really good at sales, you'll starve. Cars, and big amounts of stuff as a package deal are about the only way to get rich. sell services, or sell a 'solution'. screw sales anyway. service companies make bucks and so do home improvement contractors. Flip houses?

Job Fairs, that's how I got my gig. If there aren't any in the area you live in, check the surrounding area or the closest major city. Good Luck.

And what was your major of study?

I'm sure you've heard the saying "It's not what you know, but who you know". So start networking - always try and make contacts where ever you go. The good thing is that you are still employed - it's easier to find employment when you are working (yea, another one of those sayings). I'm not sure this is the answer you're looking for... just my .02.

Oh, and interviews are supposed to be for both sides of the party.. if they can't accomodate you with an acceptable process for interviews - that's a good indication that you may have similar issues as an employee.... Are they going to keep pushing your annual review back 'cause your boss is jet hoping around the globe? If it was me, I'd tell them to kiss off.....

One thing I've done was to call a potential employer and let them know you an offer is on the table from another firm. This may push them into gear and bring you in for the final interview. However, also be 100% prepared to have them say "take the other job".

I recently started a new job, so I just went through that process. I posted my resume on Monster and applied for a few jobs through there but hardly anything came out of that beyond the initial interview. The ones that eventually made offers to me found me on Monster and contacted me first.

So, just leave the resume on those sites. Who knows, someone may find you as well.

I just got hired at best buy, I think I'll actually enjoy it there. I know at least one person who works there. And it seems like a not bad place to work. They're even paying me a decent wage!

You actually think this is different than anyplace else out there? I'm sure there's a handful of other companies that would be different but it's the same everywhere else. I know that's a broad generalization but I've heard this story over and over from countless people.

Best bet? I agree with Rozwado - sell drugs. Or be a pimp.

I hate my job.

I can wake up when I want, have only an hour of scheduled work a week (at 6pm) and about 8-10 hours for the rest of the week.

For this I get paid above average wage.

My life sucks.

Wow, that was completely unhelpful.

Paraphrased...

Question: I hate my job, and I've found the process of finding a new one is difficult and long... is there something else I should be doing to make the process easier?

Your answer: Yeah, find a new job. I hate complainers.

I think I'm sick of people cynically castigating a well-intentioned person. It's an attitude that seems spoiled, arrogant, flippant, and completely out of touch.

Sorry, it was misdirected anger at a fellow co-worker... Let me try to be more helpful...

I have seen alot of people in sales, marketing, design world have success at networking. Just last night, we had a booth at a local Chamber of Commerce trade show. I know I had a few people ask if I knew anyone who could do so and so. They haven't even advertised an open position yet, but are trying word of mouth first. I also have received a few resumes via email from friends who know someone looking for work.

So, how about getting the word out amongst friends and colleagues- give/email them your resume. Tell everyone. Attend local business gatherings, get out and meet people in the field or perhaps something similar. Check with the chamber of commerce. Also, open up to more opportunities that may not have occurred to you before.

Just made a list of the companies you want to work for, do not send your resume just a cover letter telling the person in charge of the department you want to work that you would like to meet her or him about your abilities to fill out any needs they might have; your letter should describe briefly your skills and accomplishments and do not forget that your resume should do the same on the first page but more in details; often after they meet someone who has a great profile they will hire him or her or they will keep you in mind for another job in the future.

Lots of jobs are not advertised; you are in management so you should be able to find something great.

To find out which person is in charge of the department you are interested in; just call the company and first ask them for example who is in charge of the Sales Department if she ask you why just tell her that you want to update your list of contacts and she ask you a name just invent one.

It is going to take sometime to find the proper person but it is worth it; you do not want to impress the Human Resources Department; you want to impress a potential employer.

Good luck and I know how you feel.

I like the idea of the chamber of commerce. Also, if your undisclosed location is big enough, they probably have a local business journal that will have loads of information about companies that are expanding or have just recieved new infusions of capital. The CoC should be able to point you in the right direction.

Also, when you say wireless sales, do you work the cell counter at Radio Shack or do you work for a carrier? If you are with a carrier, I'd try to get on the corporate side of the house (if that's not where you are). There are much bigger deals to be made selling service for 100 users at a time.

Also- go to your competitiors. They know you will know how to sell against your old employer. That is a valuable asset.

Any company that takes 4 weeks and 3 interviews to fill a job position is wasting your time. Expect everything at that company to take forever, like approvals, etc. Do you really want to work at a place like that? In the end, they are jerking YOU around if they don't hire you.

It's an easy thing to say when one has a job, but at least you have one while you are looking. You can take a few chances. Just don't burn any bridges (like telling them to eff off for not knowing a good employee when they see one).

I'm a bird. I am the 1% (of pets).
