It's gone... less than 2 months after I got it.

I went out to my car this morning to go to school and found my drivers door open and the inside of my car cluttered. The glove-box, armrest compartment, ash tray, etc. everything was emptied onto the floor. The a-hole took my (almost) new 20gb iPod (with color screen), my Nikon N65 camera, the camera bag, my my RFID* school ID card, and a pack of peanut-butter crackers. Interestingly enough he left the 2 vintage Macs in my trunk (its an SUV, so the trunk is plainly visible.) Personally, I would have taken the lava lamp in the back seat before I would take a school ID. If they guy had looked harder (under the back seat) he would have found a 1.75 of Vodka... left over from last weekend, but thats another story. Over all I lost about $650 worth of stuff overnight while my car was parked in the driveway. And I'm really anal about locking my doors... this is probably the only night I have left them unlocked since I got the car a year and a half ago. Kinda makes me wonder if people just go around checking doors every night until they get lucky. Bastards.

Isn't there some place on Apple's site to report a stolen item and give them the serial number? That way, if the guy takes it in for service they can take it and give it back to me. I thought I remembered reading that somewhere, but I can't find it.

Now I'm debating weather I should get the same thing again (20gb ipod) or go for the black 4gb nano... I have 10 gb of music

I can't live without my iPod. My cd player in my car is dead and radio sucks. The iPod and cassette tape adapter have kept me sane.

*My school has gone to using RFID student ID cards to open all the outside doors. Waste of tuition money if you ask me...

If you left your doors unlocked I can't say I feel much sympathy for you. Yeah, it sucks...but... damn man. What kind of person leaves a freakin ipod and expensive camera in their car and then doesn't lock the doors?

Also, you said you have an SUV so you must be rich to afford gas these days anyway, so I guess I really don't care. You can just buy new stuff.

That really sucks about everything getting stolen - I guess thieves are on the rampage this time of year before it gets too cold.

One of my roomates had a TON of stuff stolen from her car last week, they broke her window and everything. I had my sony cybershot stolen from my car a few weeks ago, in order to move cars in and out of our driveway we have to move all the cars, and either I didn't lock my door or one of the girls moving my car didn't ( probably the case because my car is hard to lock)

Yeah, gas is expensive... but no need to be rich. I was told to take my mom's SUV or buy my own car and we all know how those offers end.

The camera isn't really that expensive, the iPod was hidden, and I ALWAYS lock my doors.

Dude, I know it sounds like people are rubbing salt in your wounds, and I feel your pain.

Still though, it isn't hard to take an iPod and a camera into the house at night.

Most house insurances will cover theft of personal items from vehicles... you could look into that. It may, or may not, be worth it based on your deductible.

Cheers,

James

That sucks - but keep an eye on eBay, I've heard of people seeing their own iPods on there.

That's also another reason why my next iPod will have engraving, makes it even more unique.

I'd tell your friends to keep an eye out for someone with a new ipod. Chances are it was someone you knew if that was the only time you left your car unlocked and it was in your driveway.

Ah this thread reminds me to go lock my truck. Might help to get the keys out of it frist. Ive got a 78 Datsun we use as a yard truck that the key stays in 90% of the time. Ive found it with the door open a few times and once on the other side of the yard out of gas(i knew it was low, but they didnt). Found a nice spot to hide the key now.

The headline should be my iPod was stolen. iPod got stolen is just wrong.

Anyway, that does suck. I hope you had a backup of all of your music.

Next time: Lock your doors.

Ouch brotha, I know your pain. If it makes you feel any better, I lost 1,500 (my PB).

Good luck, hope you find a great solution.

Sucks to be you. I've left my iPod alone up stairs with a buncha kids at the church durring youth events. I'm always worried that one day I'm going to realize that I left my iPod in a dumb spot and it's gone.

Mine was stolen when I had a few friends over in May. There were three people there who weren't friends of mine. The iPod was playing the music at the party. We didn't hear the music stop as the three people left until it was too late, thanks to a 20 person game of flip cup.

Still haven't gotten a replacement for it.

Found out who the people were, but the police wouldn't get a warrant to search for a $300 item.

I think this qualifies as a "take the law into your own hands" moment. Go steal it back! I'll help.

I hope you filed a police report. Of course, the cops won't do sh*t, but at least it will be on record in the unlikely event that your stuff (or the thief) turns up somewhere.

You should also notify the school that someone stole your school ID, and could use it to illegally access campus property. If your university has halfway decent security, they will be notified when the thief uses your ID to enter a building and maybe have a chance of catching him.

Sucks that your iPod got stolen, but nothing is ever "hidden" in a car. The places you hide things are always the first spot thieves check. Don't ever leave anything in your car unless you don't care if it gets stolen. I can't imagine leaving an iPod in my car though (disclaimer: I have a jeep that i leave the windows open and doors unlocked every night.) I forgot my iPod on the way to school once and felt so naked w/out it that I turned around and went back home to get it. Was a couple minutes late for class, but I had my iPod so it was worth it.

I've found the stuff in plain site never gets taken. I've had a cd case of burned cd's and a faceplate taken. No big deal, was kind of cool to have fingerprints from the cops dusting all over my baby for several months though. One of the other cars in my apartment complex had a few hundred dollars stolen from his wallet and every cd he owned was taken (with no back ups)!

Just chalk it up to a lesson learned and don't leave valuable stuff in your car anymore.

Call your car insurance company. If you have comprehensive, they might cover the items IN your car, as opposed to just the car. Your deductible could be as little as $100.

i bought an ipod for my brother last year. earlier this year he came over here on holiday to visit me. my sister (13) emails me while he is here saying that she took his ipod to a party and it got stolen.

another friend of mine started his own little skate company and has a bunch of little kids following him around like the pied piper. one of the kids is the brother of the punk who stole my brother's ipod.

we got it back. (not sure if the guy who stole it got a beating or not)

I can't believe you left all that stuff in your SUV to begin with. Why?

Your house insurance/renters insurance might cover it if your car insurance doesn't.

But if this ever changing world, in which we live in, makes you give in and cry, say "live and let die."

Dude, get an apartment.

It doesn't make sense to live in your car and have all belongings in there all the time !

likewise! - i wouldn't even have left the bottle of booze locked in my car overnight. round where i live, they'd smash your car windows to get a packet of cigarettes if it was left on display!

two computers, a camera and an ipod? - they must have thought you were santa claus!
