Hello all,

I'm graduating from Columbia College Chicago next year with a B.F.A in Graphic Design. My job I have dreamed about for years is working for Apple doing Quality Assurance. My question is, what major do you need for QU? I could see a Computer Science degree, Business Degree, or Graphic Design all being legit for the job.

If anyone knows someone with this type of job, or if you have this job for a company, how did you or they get in and what was the major?

I have a job at American Express Foreign Exchange pretty much lined up for when I graduate. (yeah, crazy because I just have a graphic design degree and no business experience! connections my friends ;p) Anyhow, I'd still like to use this as a steppingstone into Apple QA.

Thanks so much for your time!

You might want to ask over at http://www.qaiusa.com/

On second thought, I am not so sure, seeing the job they did "quality checking" their web design.

The disipline of software QA is still fairly new, and unfortunately it's still not too terribly well respected among commercial software firms like Apple. Many software QA engineers have Computer Science degrees, though if your university offers both a CS and a "Software Engineering" degree then SE is probably better for an aspiring QA engineer.

One piece of advice: never forget that there is more to QA than testing.

Excellent response, thanks a lot!

My concern is my Graphic Design degree will not hold up and get me a QA position. I personally would hate to see a QA job be given to someone without a trained eye for design. Do you think I still have a chance with my BFA in Graphic Design or am I out of luck?

You may have a chance. There is, after all, more to QA than just finding bugs. However, a CS or SE degree would greatly increase your chances.

What do you think it all entails? I read into it quite a bit, but would love to here your interpretation of it.
