Hey there everyone,

A non profit organisation that I do some volunteering for is thinking of starting its own independent community recording studio. We know nothing, it would suffice to say. What I need is a list of equipment you would need to start a basic studio. Thats everything. Now, i don't want to a start a "brand vs. brand" war... I just need to know what we need as a base.

Thanks heaps

How much money you got? How much space you got?

Here's the basics:

Recorder (something like an Alesis ADAT).
Desk (something like a Soundcraft Ghost).
Speakers (something like some cheapo Genelecs).
Outboard (effects - Lexicon reverbs, Yamaha multi-effects, Drawmer/Behringer compressors and gates).
Sequencer (Cubase on Mac).
Synths (Roland XV or a Korg, perhaps both).
Microphones (a few Shures and a good vocal mic like a Rode. AKGs are also good).
Cables.
A few bits and bobs (DI box, stuff like that).
A bit of treatment for the rooms (see www.auralex.com for FAQs/how-tos).

That little lot is suggested because if it's a community place you'll need reasonable quality stuff which is sturdy and won't break easily. Have a browse around www.studiospares.com for a general idea of what sort of gear goes into the type of studios you're talking about.

You're welcome to PM me about this.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
That's where there's thunder... and the wind shouts back.
