The $100 laptop computers that Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers want to get into the hands of the world's children would be durable, flexible and self-reliant.
Interesting cocnept. I guess even people in the western world would be interested. Well, BUT, it runs Linux !

Read it on engadget, if it was Intel eMate 2006, I'd buy one But its a PC .

Not sure what processor it is, but its 500MHz and 1Gb RAM.

Look after my manor, or I will bum you, literally, to death.

Well, just imagine, if it's an Intel chip, you might be able to run next gen OS X on it. Not fast, but hey, who knows...

To save on software costs, the laptops would run the freely available Linux operating system instead of Windows.
fixed...

actually, i wouldnae mind one myself to use as a digital notebook when travelling round. at under $100 [about £55] you wouldn't be too bothered if it got lost or stolen and the armoured casing and hand-cranking idea [presumably working on the same principal as the clockwork radio] sounds pretty cool.

i'd be pretty surprised if they can do all that for £55 tho'. they'll prob be looking for some pretty hefty subsidies from somewhere - and since it's all at the 'blueprint' and 'proposal' stage at the minute, methinks it might unfortunately turn out to be another product by the ever popular "vapourware corporation"

I thought the idea was for it to be given to needy people and in areas like South America and Africa. Hence the hand crank for the battery reserve.

I couldn't mind a hand crank, or solar cells. Powerbook and all.

OSX x86 could (and does) run on AMD's as well. AMD and Intel are both x86 Architecture, just different technologies in the making of their chips.

What would someone in a developing country need with a laptop, anyway?

If you were starving to death, had no money, lackluster shelter, disease, lived with the possibility of goverment coups and looking forward to death at an early age - wtf? How about they think about spending the money and resources to make these people sustainable instead?

The only thing I can think of why this is even an idea : these countries are the next stops for the out-sourcing train!

Hmm, closed-minded aren't we?

How about weather reports? Communication with doctors? Schooling for the kids?

At $100 any SME could issue a laptop to ALL employees including the janitor! What a janitor needs with a computer is beyond me.

It looks cool, but no thank you. I love my Mac.
