I'm curious about the new anti-phishing law in California. I get phishing-style e-mails all the time. Does this mean I could theoretically leverage those into $500,000 judgments for each company who spams me? I'm sure there are many practical limitations to this, namely that most spammers are probably offshore and therefore do not fall under the jurisdiction of the state of California. I'm also sure that if it were possible to get that kind of money, everybody would be scrambling to hire an attorney. Still, it's intriguing. With that kind of incentive (and the notion that I'd be performing a public service), why not go for it?

No company in their right mind sends out phishing mails.
Good luck with collecting the $ 500,000 from some Russian script kiddie.

So is this a useless law, or does it have at least some teeth?

No teeth really. You might catch an idiot who actually sends his fishing mails from within the US.

It's a scam whereby a criminal tries to deceive you into divulging personally or financially sensitive information for the purpose of committing identity theft.
