Let's just say I would have $5000 and an educational discount at the Apple store.

For a laptop, monitor and tower, what should I get? What's the best bang for the buck?

I currently have a first gen 17" Powerbook with 768 RAM.
I also have and iPod and a iSight, mini mouse.... old airport base station... stuff like that.

Should I sell that and add the cash to the pot?

What would you do?

I'd save the money too. Buying new cutting edge computer equipment is almosta worse investment than buying a brand new car. If you really want a desktop, pick up a refurbed G5 off from the apple store or in the marketplace section. Then get a Dell 20" widescreen monitor for cheap somewhere.
dual G4 overclocked, blessed, and liquid cooled with jesus water. +5 to ogres and paladins! Nyar!

I need to get a tower for school/work projects. I have no monitor, and the money is set aside for this computer purchase. I thought this would be a little more fun...

BTW- I'll be living in an RV for 4-6 months- so perhaps instead of the tower, an iMac...?

With the 600 watt (or something close to that) power supply in the G5 tower, you might notice a bit of a jump in your fuel costs if you're powering it in an RV...

I will have power- but thanks for the heads-up.

Why do you need a tower?

The power of a tower for my Photoshop CS2 work, other than that- nothing. But it's a dog on my laptop.

IMHO, it's worth investing in a nice monitor and a OK computer, but you shouldn't spend over 3K for the whole thing... less for the Edu. model. dual referb towers are going for $1,649.00... I would buy one and a nice non-Apple monitor... depending upon what you would be using it for...

ALSO, BUY A NICE PRINTER!!!

I have a Dual 867 G4 here at work- so honestly, I'd be happy with anything better than that. I have no problem with refurbs. But on the monitor, I do need something decent for color correction. Maybe I'll have some leftover for nice peripherals.

Oh and I have an HP 1220C/PS and and EPSON Picture Mate

iMacs are nice, and almost as powerful as the towers, unless you want a different/larger monitor.

OK- you sell your computer and do the same.

Oh, and I give money to lots of causes. This money was saved and earmarked just for this purchase. I work hard, I play hard.

I have now lost all excitement for getting a new system.
