That's weird. I checked the site this week and thought I read that they hadn't made the final cut. Very glad to see they did. That's a pretty big acheivement in and of itself.

P.S. - They even made an OS X widget to track the team's progress. How cool is that?

EDIT: Am I missing something? I just looked at the DARPA page and don't see Team Bonsai listed among the finalists?

I hear people using this qualifier all the time "in and of itself", yet I don't know how it is different from plainly saying "a pretty big achievement".

It's being used here to emphasize the fact that it's quite an achievement merely to qualify for this race.

I remember that our Philosophy teacher (back then when I was a freshman) tried to teach us the meaning of "of itself" and "in itself" when applied to abstract things. It never stuck to me, but I know they have a special meaning. Somehow I think that 99% of the people who say "in and of itself" don't put much thought on this.

[added] I just looked it up. It seems that Sartre's theory of Being plays with "in itself" and "for itself" so much that it warps my mind.

Sartré warps minds without trying, and he's been dead for how long?

By the way, it's "DARPA" not Darpa; the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency runs the challenge.

FYI, I checked again and it looks like Team Banzai did not make the finals.

At least they tried there best. That is all that can be expected.

Say "hi" to Stanley.

Congratulations to Stanford; they seem to be the winner. How could they possibly go wrong with a TDI Touareg on Redbull?
