Apparently a lot of the popular theories for galaxies and the universe were still based on Newtonian phsycis because it was "good enough." It works fine for solar systems and planetary systems becuase you're not worrying about the effect of gravity outside of the immediate area.

However, when you get to the size of a galaxy, Newtonian physics doesn't work too well (push and pushback ideology). Given the amount of visible matter in our galaxy it doesn't account for the amount of gravitational forces. Galaxies should just spin off and fly apart! And why the heck is the universe accelerating?! Well, if using our current Newtonian based models, there seemed to be more matter than we could see. Planetary systems not around stars but just floating in space (which we've actually have identified), non-reflective bodies, and more than previously speculated high-mass cingularities would make up the dark matter to explain the additional gravitational forces.

So now some really smart people have refitted a few equations using General Relativity instead of Newtonion physics, and they've been able to do away with most of the dark matter. Newton didn't know about quantum physics. "Weak" and "strong" forces between bodies and particles. So they weren't factored into many of the physics modles when dealing with something as large as a galaxy (partly because of the computer power required to do such a calculation!) Now weak gravitaitonal forces were factored in and mose of the mysterious dark matter can be done away with.

Part of the reasoning why weak forces weren't really considered was because they don't have any disernable effect on larger bodies. You only really worry about it on a quantum level. However, given how much matter is floating around, it's cumulative. All that gravitational force has just enough effect to keep our galaxies from flying apart and the universe accelerating.

Neat stuff!

This thread contains material on gravity. Gravity is a theory, not a fact, regarding a force that cannot be directly seen. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully, and critically considered.

Heresy! All those who truly believe know that there is dark matter, and that it consists of great masses of spaghetti.

Lois: My God! He just walked right over the edge..
Peter: Of course he did! Christians don't believe in gravity.

Pastafarianism is the ONE true faith. Accept no imitations!
One should never stop striving for clarity of thought and precision of expression.
I would prefer my humanity sullied with the tarnish of science rather than the gloss of religion.

Thanks. Now go disprove it for us by jumping off a building. You'll do both Gravity and Us a favor.

So's evolution. It should be approached with an open mind considering it has a lot to back it up, unlike the bible.

Does this mean no W.I.M.Ps

Weakly Iteracting Massive Particles.

I guess we can forget about the whole neutrino mass thing as well.

Finally, does this relegate the cosmological constant back to "biggest mistake" category?

Just wondering!!

Thanks for the info ole-citychicken.

Dear god, man. That's Mel Gibson, and Lois (as in a woman's name) not Louis (man's). But you're thinking; I like that

We need to give the Intelligent Falling theory proper representation in this thread.

I didn't read the whole thread, mostly because I'm lazy, but if whoever started it had taken Physics 101 you would know that the first thing you learn is that Newtonian physics is only good for describing the universe if you ignore the very, very big and the very, very small.

Any scientific theory that requires the invention of quadrillions of trillions of billions of tons of invisible, undetectable matter has surely got to be flawed !!

I've always thought that.

Awww... then this degree in Advanced Physics is no better then my degree in Theology. Another 4 years of my life wasted.
